Yesterday a large shipment for the Oceanium was recieved from the now closed Aquatropia - Antwerp :
1 young female Zebra shark
14 Batfishes
3 Cownose rays
1 Humphead wrasse
1 Clown coris
2 Laced moray eels
1 Emperor red snapper
14 Up-side-down jellyfishes which are for the new Mangrove-hall under construction.

In Ausgust 2002 Chimpanzee-male Fons was sterillisated because it was not completly clear if he was a pure-bred Western chimpanzee and to avoid more sub-species hybrids this step was taken.
Genetic reseach has improved quite a bit over the last 15 year and renewed testing of Fons proved now that he is a pure-bred Western chimpanzee.
To give him the change to breed, Fons has undergone a surgical operation and his vas deferens were fixed again.
Now it is to wait if everything went well and if Fons will become father of some pure Chimp-babies.

So there are 1.2 now?
Before the arrival of the new young female from Odense Zoo, they already held a pair which has never bred till date. I am not sure what ages and the origins of the original pair are (will check it up and over).
From the pair already at Burgers the male was imported from Beauval in 2005.
An earlier pairing (a Nuernberg born M x Nuernberg born F) bred twice in 1993 and 1995. That male was transferred to Singapore Zoo in 1996.
Sometime earlier - 1991 - another male arrived from Amsterdam Zoo (born there). He never sired any offspring while at Burgers Zoo and was sent to Paris Zoo in 2014.

Another Screaming piha hatched ! Now the population should be 2-2-1 .

A Green imperial pigeon has left the nest and a large number of other birds are incubating eggs in the Bush, among the White-eared catbirds and Fairy bluebirds .

Visited yesterday, a very interesting and enjoyable trip as last time I went was two years ago!!
Some things I noticed:
- Meerkats were offshow, not sure why but their enclosure is being worked on.
- Tapirs are gone, enclosure being revamped for new inhabitants
- Pygmy hippo never showed!! It's just the one isn't it?
- No sign of the jackals
- In Rimba, the sun bears have been separated (male outside in the morning, two females outside later in the afternoon), and the pig-tailed macaques and the siamangs were locked inside for the day
- There are only a few bird aviaries left, specifically the flamingo pond, the former European bird aviary (now housing Eurasian black vultures), and the row of bird aviaries that have the indoor viewing next door to the ape house (all except the great hornbills, who are gone). The new Mangrove ecodisplay looks a lot smaller than Desert or Bush from the outside, and I'll be curious to see what it looks like inside. Interestingly, the old Mangrove house has been connected to the new round biome house as an entrance I think.
- The chimps are split into at least two groups at the moment; I counted at least four or five outside; males Jing and Giambo, females Moni and Raimee, and one other female who had her back turned, and nine inside; males Fons and Ghineau, females Jimmie (I think, she was below the viewing window so was hard to see properly), Moniek, Gaby, I think Morami, Tushi, Erika and I think Geisha. No sign of Marlene, Roos or Tesua (these were likely outdoors or offshow).
- Saw all eleven of the gorillas and a group of four golden-bellied mangabeys
- Female cheetah with six cubs was onshow
- The dik-diks have gone from Safari
- Pelicans and grey crowned cranes in an enclosure by the Safari picnic area
- Managed to find a pitiful 11/35 bird species in Bush. Saw, heard and photographed a displaying screaming piha, as well as the anhinga. Sadly missed the chachalacas and the catbirds (two other birds on my ticklist for Bush).
- Only one broad-snouted caiman in Bush from the looks of things.
- Couldn't see the baby aardvark
- Only two manatees visible?? Maybe the old female has gone?
- Counted ten sharks in the big shark tank in Ocean; one scalloped hammerhead, one blacktip, two leopard and six blacktip reef
- Saw almost all the small mammal rarities in the Tunnel and in Desert, with the exception of the rock squirrel. (Saw the Merriam's kangaroo rat, hispid cotton rat, cactus mouse, ringtail and bobcat)

They are building up a new group of meerkats, so they are not as visible as the old group...

and the jackals also have a tunnel system outside The baby aardvark normally stays in the sleeping den (in the smaller enclosure) during the day...
The golden-bellied mangabeys should have a baby so 2.2.1

Got clear views of both females, as well as the male and a younger animal, neither of the girls had a baby unfortunately
