Chester Zoo Game

My first thought was one of the macaws, because I momentarily assumed Macau was an island like Hong Kong, but it's not.

So my guess is Red-billed Curassow, assuming an etymological link with Curacao.

Red-billed Curassow is indeed correct.

The name Curassow is a derivation of Curacao, an island on which no species of Curassow occur - either naturally or introduced.

Macaw is from a Portuguese word macau but that is thought most likely to be from a native South American word, and apparently has no connection to Macau in China.

Next one:

A rock and a Rock.

I have a couple of strange fancies about this one.

First: Emerald Starling, with emerald being the rock, and the alternative name Iris Starling being the Rock because of the Romanian rock band IRIS which I'm assuming you're familiar with.

A good guess, but not the one.

okay, second: Chalk Bass, with chalk being the rock, and the specific name is tortugarum after Tortuga which I connected to Rock via the Tortuga Music Festival because I couldn't think of any other way.

I was surprised that Chester doesn't seem to have any pelicans, because that would have been my first idea (from Alcatraz).

Is the correct answer, but not quite the right reasoning - chalk is the rock, the Rock is Bass Rock, a major Scottish seabird colony honoured in the names both of the Northern Gannet (Morus bassanus) and of the seabird exhibit at Rotterdam Zoo. ;)

oh! Bass Rock. That's obvious now that you say it!

I had been hoping that Tortuga had been known as "the Rock" in some pirate connection or something like that, but couldn't find anything.

not the Tequila Splitfin. An appropriate choice, but gentle lemur used that one just a few turns ago so it would be too obvious.

here's the next puzzle. animal's name has a connection to alcohol.

Celestial pearl danio (also known as galaxy rasbora) has the specific name margaritatus.

Margarita is a cocktail containing tequila.

I used to breed those. Brilliant little fish. But no, that is not the correct answer unfortunately.

Seeing it came up though, I had a quick Google for the origin of the name Margarita. Of course margaritatus means something akin to "covered in pearls" so I wondered if there was any relation between Margaritas and pearls. There is not. There's not even any genuine version of how the Margarita was invented or by whom. It seems generally acknowledged that the name is from the woman's name though (Margaret, Margarita, Rita, etc). And so ends my lesson on the naming of the Margarita.

Wild Turkey? Famous Grouse? Not on Chester's books unfortunately.
Rothschild's mynah with a family connection to Chateau Mouton Rothschild?

nope, sorry.

I know the Rothschilds only from Walter's zoological efforts. And banking I suppose.

No kingfishers, colobus, walia, or elephant named Tusker either in Chester, otherwise they could be linked to beer brands....
