Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo News 2018

I think you need to wait until it's finished and see it for yourself before getting so overheated; I suspect the area with the bark is a viewing area.

I have just looked at it again and it is the inside area because they have got webbing and a few things made out made out of hose piping and being as everything is supposed to be natural why use webbing that is not is natural

Who says everything is supposed to be natural?
I refer to the answer I gave earlier.

I wonder if both groups of chimps, i.e. the larger currently in the gorilla house and also the smaller in the chimp complex will be housed in this new structure at the same time ?

Regardless of the good or bad points of the design, and I think it is too early to give an opinion, I want to say what a fantastic use of technology this is.

For people like us, who are fascinated by everything zoo related, it is a treat to see the enclosures from the animals point of view, the off show areas from a keepers point of view and the public viewing areas.

I would also suggest any comments be balanced and informed if you ever want to have this level of access to information again.

They say they will have 'all 18' in one group, so yes. They may even be integrating them while the building is still closed, as the new surroundings will no doubt help reduce aggression levels in the bigger group. Or it might take a while longer...

I listened to the interview with the CEO again. Somewhere it mentions that the outside will be 'more natural', so there will probably be considerable difference between the more sterile appearance/materials used inside and a more natural look outside- which is what you'd expect in a modern Ape new build like this one. Similar to e.g. enclosures at places like London, Bristol, Paignton etc. I think the style of the barren outside areas is probably also in the past for Twycross now, judging from the planting of the recent Gibbon exhibits. Though a large group of Chimps may well wreck initial attempts at naturalistic planting...

For my part, whatever it ultimately looks like, I know it will be a huge improvement on what the Twycross Chimps have lived in previously, so am just pleased its finally been done.:)

It’s most likely just holiday visitors as even if the Chimps are open, the zoo haven’t advertised that fact.

The zoo really has been a victim of its own success over the last few years. Their developments combined with on point marketing have been drawing crowds bigger than they can handle! I suspect the car park and road improvements may come sooner rather than later too!

From their FB it sounds like hell there today. Some of their carpark is closed due to flooding/drainage problems so that will have worsened any problems. There's no mention of the Chimp building being open...but under the circumstances they might be reluctant to say even if it was, as it might attract even more people to try and go.

Hi I have just spoken to someone that visited yesterday and no the chimp building hasn't been finished, the last 2 elephants are inside looking really stressed so the sooner they go to Blackpool the better

Far be it for me to question this zoo's business and marketing practices but why offer an almost fifty per cent discount on admission prices when the children are off school for the Easter holiday period?, and yes, from what I have just read on their facebook comments, trying to gain entry at present does appear to look like hell at present.

Those two elephants should have been at Blackpool by now, they are perhaps still at Twycross because the new chimp house is not yet open, if it is the case that they are stressed as they are missing the two others then I suggest the management of Twycross are putting profit before animal welfare.

But are they really stressed, or just somebody thinks they are...and as for the time of transport, the mother/calf duo has probably taken longer to crate train to the required degree, plus no doubt moving them over the Easter period would mean Blackpool would have had to close their new house again at this very busy period. So overall I think they'll move them when its the right time- I don't think the few weeks apart will seriously do any of them any real harm.

I didn't really understand that either- unless its an attempt to capture more schoolchildren/families at a time when they know they are 'available'. But a badly drained carpark has meant this offer has rather backfired on them- something similar happened with another offer last year which resulted in a mass descent on the zoo that they couldn't cope with.

Image on facebook looks like the 'bark' area seen in the 3d illustration. I'm pretty sure it's the walkway for visitors and not in danger of having loose fittings thrown through the windows by upset chimps.

I spoke to someone that visited yesterday and she said the 2 elephants were inside just swaying and she said it was sad because they were inside with nothing to do fingers crossed now they have said the new chimp eden is nearly ready they will send the last 2 to Blackpool, I saw a photo on social media about Albert going back to Barcelona I got the impression he came over to help train the elephants to go in the crates nice picture of Esha going into a crate. Elephant Business Inc on face book

Yes I follow this very interesting Facebook group also, and very informative it is too. From photos I have seen Esha appears to be having no problem whatsoever going into the crate. Twycross initialy stated that the four elephants would be going to Blackpool "two by two" ie two in each crate traveling together, that has not been the case. My reservation about them going to Blackpool was how would Kate get on with them , in particular with Minbu, from what I have seen all three appear to be getting on well I am pleased to see, and it must be remembered that little Esha is very fond of Tara, as Tara is of her so hopefully they will all be together soon.

Its possible the dynamic between Kate and the Twycross elephants will change again when the Twycross group are reunited- or maybe it won't. If she gets along with Minbu, as appears the case, then Minbu's subordinates(?) probably won't bother her either, but I imagine she may always been somewhat an outsider from the Twycross family group.

A question was asked on there a week ago about when Noorjahan and Esha would move- the answer was still sort of 'not sure when, but when they were ready/happy with the crate'.

Are they supposed to go in a single crate together?
