Burgers' Zoo Burgers Zoo 2018

The zoo is currently behind the scenes breeding two new reptiles for Burgers' Mangrove!
We're talking about the Allison's anole (Anolis allisoni) and the White-throated Gecko (Gonatodes albogularis)
Exciting to know there's more tiny reptiles to spot and both species are beautiful!
Hopefully they will add more reptiles later on aswell if these two species succeed!

Great news, reptiles as a group are a bit underrepresented in Burgers' so these two (rare) species are more than welcome.

(Green) iguanas are planned for the Mangrove too, but the vegetation needs time to settle before they can be released.

I wish they would go with Antillean iguanas (Iguana delicatissima), but that sure does not fit the theme! Perhaps they could stick in another Ctenosaura taxon from this part of Meso-America.

Still a least concern, wide-ranging species found in a variety of habitats though...the most 'mangrovey' option would be Utila iguanas (Ctenosaura bakeri), however there's already quite a few holders of them in Europe, so several other Iguanid species would benefit from a new holding more...

not that this tangent is really relevant, as the zoo have only ever mentioned green iguanas for the Mangrove.

In the article in their magazine they just mentioned 'iguanas' so it was never confirmed as green iguanas. Gotta stay positive!

It has never been confirmed in public, but as far as I know green iguana was the initial species of choice. I think it was mentioned during the Mangrove evening lecture or by a keeper. Naturally plans change, especially as they are trying to create a sort of ecosystem.

A manatee has died this morning. The 30 year old female was found dead in her enclosure during opening hours. The mangrove has been closed down and the dead manatee was sent to Utrecht for research on how she died. An average manatee lives up to 50 years

8 Gars (they look like Spotted gar) were introduced to the Manatee tank to keep the Cichlid population somewhat in check.

The Mangrove jellyfish also seem to be in their enclosure now, they were sighted by a regular visitor.

Given how broad the snout looks I'd say that's a young tropical gar, which have very similar markings to the spotted and fit the geographic theming better.

It is indeed the tropical garas @Swampy mentioned. The Jellyfish have been indeed in the pool. But they are hard to see with the muddy waters. Not sure if the sign for the jellyfish are up!
