Plecotus
Up to eighteen or more species, two of which are represented in the Zoochat galleries.

This is a really complex genus, with a lot of splitting and lumping taking place. At its most constricted there was only a single species (Plecotus auritus) with a multitude of subspecies. In the species list presented here, there are many which elsewhere are treated as subspecies of (in particular) Plecotus auritus and Plecotus austriacus.

Brown Long-eared Bat Plecotus auritus
Three subspecies: auritus, begognae, ponticus. The last-named (ponticus) was described in 2025 for a population in the Caucasus Mountains. The second one (begognae) is restricted to the Iberian Peninsula, and the nominate auritus is found over most of Europe. Other former subspecies have been split as full species.

There are over 100 other species in the genus Myotis. Because of the number of species I have put the arrangement of the species in the following list alphabetically by subgenera rather than just as a single alphabetical list. I have left the above pictured species in this list (marked with asterisks) so that it can be easily seen to which subgenera they each belong. By no means should you take the following list as a definite list of species (or even of subgenera), because the taxonomists are always playing around with this genus.

Only two species are represented in the Zoochat galleries, both of the genus Kerivoula, albeit with one only as a taxidermy specimen.
