Are there not Black Rats living in Berlin? Or melanistic norvegicus?

~Thylo

There are some black rats left, but Norwegian rat are far more common and as in most NW European urban areas Black rats are outcompeted. If you saw a really black rat it well might be a Black rat, the easiest id option is often tail length and body shape.

Here are the bad photos I got of the individual in question, next to a Brown Rat (I figured they just coexisted):

The animal in question looks considerably darker than the Brown Rat to me, but I'll let more knowledgeable make the determination.

Colouration can't be used as an ID feature because both species are so variable. If you look for a good photo of a Brown Rat and a good photo of a Black Rat, showing the tails of each, you'll see how easy they are to tell apart from tail length (relative to body length). Brown Rats are also bigger and chunkier than Black Rats, but this is more obvious when you're already familiar with both species.

As lintworm said, though, your animal is indeed a Black Rat.

I have never seen a Brown rat that dark though, but there are plenty of brown Black rats around indeed.

You certainly get black Brown Rats, but true enough that the black of a Black Rat is not the black of a black Brown Rat.

Black Rats always look sleek and glossy to me also, whereas Brown Rats tend to look coarse, which can be seen in the photo.
