Mustelids in captivity

Concerning the Beech Martens, we now know where N.A. zoos can now get some to start a captive population.:) No animals would be taken from their native range, no import issues and it would help control an introduced species.

The main question would be if zoos would even want them. Small mustelids and mongooses (except Meerkat) are generally rather lacking in our NA zoos.

I think Columbus keeps Wolverine as well. My question is, is there anywhere that keeps American Wolverines? It seems to AZA has been importing Wolverines from European zoos in recent years.

That's interesting. I didn't know AZA was importing European Wolverines. Wonder why when we have Wolverines here in NA.

I've seen striped skunks in the non AZA Bear Country USA and in the Hogle Zoo, American badgers in Omaha and Bear Country, sea otters in Point Defiance, striped skunks and weasels (can't remember which species) years ago in the Minnesota Zoo, wolverine in Detroit, and northern river otters in Detroit, Omaha, Blank Park, Hogle, and probably several others.

Are there any Neotropical or European River otters in North America? Never heard of any. Suspect it's because our native river otters are much easier to come by.

As of April, only Columbus, Detroit, Minnesota, and San Francisco listed wolverines on their websites.

How long ago was your Omaha trip? They definitely didn't have badgers last month.

As for species I'd most like to see:

1. Patagonian weasel- L. patagonicus (only Genus I haven’t seen)

2. Nilgiri marten- M. gwatkinsii (would complete the Genus for me!)

3. Mountain weasel- M. altaica (always saw it listed on zootierliste but never got a chance to visit Lithuania)

4. Hairy-nosed otter- L. sumatrana (1 of 2 otters I haven’t seen, and the one that @devilfish has me most jealous of)

It can vary a lot depending of the definition of "unusual", but I think that maybe small-clawed otters are the only species that we can call "usual" in zoos, so everything else would be "unusual". In my case this would include:

-Chinese ferret-badger (Melogale moschata)
-Clawless otter (Aonyx capensis)
-Eurasian badger (Meles meles)
-European mink (Mustela lutreola)
-Giant otter (Pteronura brasiliensis)
-Honey badger (Mellivora capensis cottoni)
-North American river otter (Lutra canadensis)
-Sea otter (Enhydra lutris)
-Tayra (Eira barbara)
-Wolverine (Gulo gulo)
-Yellow-throated marten (Martes flavigula)

In the wild, also least weasel (Mustela nivalis)

Pretty much every species not seen/photographed before, but the most wished species would be:

African striped weasel (Poecilogale albinucha)
Back-striped weasel (Mustela strigidorsa)
Black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes)
Greater and lesser grisons (Galictis spp)
Hog badger (Arctonyx collaris)
Japanese badger (Meles anakuma)
Japanese marten (Martes melampus)
Malayan weasel (Mustela nudipes)
Nilgiri marten (Martes gwatkinsii)
Patagonian weasel (Lyncodon patagonicus)
Spot-necked otter (Lutra maculicollis)
Zorrilla (Ictonyx striatus)

And my most wished of all: Marbled polecat (Vormela peregusna):rolleyes::rolleyes:

Where did you see Chinese ferret badger?
