I still have at least three butterfly species to identify and maybe a few other invertebrates as well but I will post those once I'm sure of my identification.

Took my dog for a walk through the neighborhood this afternoon. Plenty of bird calls in the woods. Saw tracks belonging to Feral Rabbits, American Red Squirrels, and Snowshoe Hares. Listened to a Woodpecker (unknown species) working the trees. Picked up two bird species and another mammal:

Birds:
2. Bald Eagle - Haliaeetus Leucocephalus
3. Black-capped Chickadee - Poecile Anteicapillus

Mammals:
3. Moose - Alces Alces Gigas

Should pick up a few more birds tomorrow.

Finally added some new birds to the list by walking past the same sacred fig this morning that I had gone to on 1/1 to tipsily get my first ten. Two additions:

Birds:
11. Common tailorbird (Orthotomus sutorius)
12. Red-vented bulbul (Pycnonotus cafer)

1 - European shag (Gulosus aristotelis)

That is a very nice species to see just on your way to school! One I'm still lacking on my list.

I've also picked up two more species:

Birds
107. Hawfinch, Coccothraustes coccothraustes
108. Short-toed treecreeper, Certhia brachydactlya

After two weeks of sitting on just 10 bird species, today's turning out to be a big day! Got three more species this afternoon, the last of them quite unexpected :)

14. Intermediate egret (Ardea intermedia)
15. White-throated kingfisher (Halcyon smyrnensis)

You will much more likely have seen Certhia brachydactyla.

I tried looking on google which the more common species is, as I didn't get a very close look at the bird. Thanks for telling! I'll make sure to update that.

It might be worth investing in a good bird guide, the "ANWB vogelgids" from Svensson is easily the best and covers all of Europe, including Northern African and parts of W Asia. Alternatively there is the "Zakgids Vogels van Nederland en Belgie" which is much more basic and only covers the 300 most common species of the low countries, but is sufficient when used in NL only...

Well after last year being my most successful year yet and my commitments to getting out and birding more, I decided to stop by a lake near my mother's house today first my first birding session of the new year! The lake is an excellent spot for wintering waterfowl and gulls, and hosts year-round populations of Bald Eagle and kingfisher. The area around it is very forested, which is great for finding songbirds and hawks. A neighboring farm makes for good turkey habitat and I've even spotted a wild Ring-Necked Pheasant here before. I went out today knowing I'd be getting a good head start on my year!

Birds
1) American Robin Turdus migratorius

That's it, that's all I saw. When I simply drove past it around Christmas I found Hooded and Common Merganser, swan, a group of Ring-Billed Gulls, multiple eagles, and even a couple bluebirds. But today, only a single robin that flew across the road in front of my car as I was approaching the lake.

I wasn't going to let that stop me, though. I drove home, sat down at my computer, and found the nearest good birding spot to me. There are surprisingly very few in central Connecticut, but I picked my spot and was determined to find some birds!

That is, until I remembered it's January in New England and it's already pitch black outside.

~Thylo

Finally saw some more birds at a feeder while at my friends house.

Birds
2) Black-Capped Chickadee Poecile atricapillus
3) House Finch Haemorhous mexicanus
4) White-Breasted Nuthatch, Sitta carolinensis

I'll look into both of these books, if I get some cash to spend I may consider buying the one that covers whole Europe. I'm only recently getting into birding, I'm sure some kind of identification guide would be helpful, thanks for telling me about these two books!
