Mouse Opossum (0 holders): One species kept privately.

Sulawesi Bear Cuscus (1 holder): Memphis Zoo

Northern Common Cuscus (0 holders): Only kept privately in the US.

Ornate Cuscus (0 holders): Only kept privately in the US.

Know what species of Mouse Opossum? Is it Marmosa murina just like Frankfurt Zoo recently acquired?

Know the origin of the Bear Cuscus? Would they be a separate species/subspecies than the Mountain Bear Cuscus (Ailurops ursinus furvus) found at Batu Secret Zoo?

And DOES ANYONE know the whereabouts of the privately kept Northern Common and Ornate Cuscus????

Just to review -- so from what I'm seeing, there are no quolls or carnivorous marsupials in U. S. zoos at all, save the devil population which was pretty low until recently, right? Interesting that Australian predators are not really represented, especially when one considers coverage of many other biomes is more dominated by predators than prey these days.

It is easy to maintain long-term populations of macropods because they have reasonable lifespans and can be kept in groups. Carnivorous marsupials are all short-lived, so captive populations can falter easily.

In Texas Sharkarosa Wildlife Ranch has Eastern grey kangaroo and Swamp wallaby. TGR Exotics Wildlife Park has Wallaroo. For Virginia Luray Zoo has Bennett's wallaby. For Washington Cougar Mountain Zoo has Swamp wallaby. Finally, for New York Staten Island Zoo has Feather-tailed glider.

There were no Tasmanian Devils in US zoos number just a handful of years ago actually.

In addition to what @Chlidonias said, we are also currently at the whim of what Australia allows us to import from them, which isn't much and was even less only a few years ago. The only reason Europe has quolls atm is because Leipzig imported a whole group years ago and got lucky with breeding. If I recall a lull in breeding a few years back threatened the population but it seems things are back on track. Hamerton of course just imported their quolls direct from Australia and, while I certainly hope they breed, I'm not quite sure that species will stick around with only 2.2 founders.

I thought about the low lifespan factor, having been reading about quolls earlier today; but I wasn't necessarily intending to compare strictly with macropods though; it was actually the possums that were on my mind, but evidently they live a little longer than I expected.

Tasmanian Wombats are the same species as Common Wombat, although they are a separate subspecies and ABQ is the only zoo in the country with them.

Whereas in Europe both subspecies are found in four collections, whilst the poor Southern hairy-nosed is 1.1 (still off-show) at Longleat. I think Europe have a better collection of Australian marsupials but America can get held of opossums far easier by the looks of things.

Great thread by the way. :)
