ZooChat Big Year 2019

Batch from a three days stay at Issen including two lifers during my birthday (especially happy with the wheatear which I've probably seen last week but I cannot be sure since I have no pictures), another one two days prior and a whole bunch of invertebrates including one or two I still haven't identified.

All-in-all, probably one of my favourite moments birding-wise this year and I'm hoping to end this week beautifully with a visit to Tamri tomorrow!

20/04/2019 (Issen)
BIRDS:
89 - Western olivaceous warbler, Iduna opaca

INVERTEBRATES:

11 - European paper wasp, Polistes dominula

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
21/04/2019 (Issen)
INVERTEBRATES:
12 - White-banded digger bee, Amegilla quadrifasciata
13 - Long-tailed blue, Lampides boeticus

BIRDS:
90 - Melodious warbler, Hyppolais polyglotta
91 - Black-eared wheatear, Oenanthe hispanica

MAMMALS:

3 - Striped ground squirrel, Xerus erythropus

Couldn't resist looking out for a thick-knee I've heard calling (I hear them nearly every two days or so, they are very common near my house weirdly enough) and did indeed see it flying so that is a welcome addition before hopefully heading to Tamri tomorrow:

24/04/2019 (Agadir)
BIRDS:
92 - Eurasian thick-knee, Burhinus oedicnemus

I am currently at about 150 birds, but as I hate typing on smartphones just one update for now:

Singapore Airport:
92. House crow (Corvus splendens)

After 2+ months traveling I am back home. The species numbers are not impressive, but when looking at rarity it is becoming more interesting. First the mammals and reptiles

A final morning at Cat Tien got me two more species! This will be the last Asian stuff for the year, unless I see something at the airport tomorrow morning.

BIRDS:
360) Coppersmith barbet, Psilopogon haemacephalus
361) Orange-breasted trogon, Harpactes oreskios

What a species to end the trip off with! Couldn't have asked for anything better. The total trip list was 240 bird species in two weeks, of which 228 species were additions this year and 195 were lifers. Quite a succesful trip, I'd say! :D

A few corrections - the black-naped monarch we thought we saw in Bach Ma ended up being a misidentification, and it would appear I completely forgot to post 3 bird species I saw in Vietnam - the first two in Van Long, the third in Cat Tien. The last addition was seen in France.

BIRDS:
361) Zitting cisticola, Cisticola juncidis
362) Bright-headed cisticola, Cisticola exilis
363) Van Hasselt's sunbird, Leptocoma brasiliana
364) Eurasian woodcock, Scolopax rusticola

28. Asian house rat (Rattus tanezumi)
I've been looking at the taxonomy of Asian "black rats" lately, trying to work them out. Originally they were all Rattus rattus of course, and then the Asian House Rat R. tanezumi was split off. The urban rats in Malaysia and Singapore had always been R. rattus diardi, and a lot of papers still tended to separate diardi from Rattus tanezumi as a subspecies of Rattus rattus. Now diardi is treated as a synonym of tanezumi, hence all the sites and books basically saying every "black rat" in east and southeast Asia is tanezumi. However genetic work shows that Asian "black rats" fall into at least three distinct groups. You've got 1) the actual Rattus rattus in southern Asia (i.e. India, from which it spread to Europe and then to places like New Zealand and America), 2) Rattus tanezumi in eastern Asia (e.g. Japan, Hong Kong, north Vietnam, etc), and 3) the former diardi which group quite separately from either rattus or tanezumi and are found in southern southeast Asia (e.g. Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia). Both groups 2 and 3 coexist in central southeast Asia (Thailand and Burma). Group 3 is likely to be a separate species which is currently unnamed.

There's a good paper here with tables (especially Tables 3 and 4 are useful): Revisiting the taxonomy of the Rattini tribe: a phylogeny-based delimitation of species boundaries

Of the sea birds we missed more, including most notably Fiordland crested penguin, for which we were there in the wrong season.

So ... Barbary Dove then? :p

146. Pied stilt (Himantopus himantopus leucocephalus)
I find it weird that you split things like Saddlebacks and Robins and Purple Swamphen but not the stilts. I just checked what the HBW does and they keep all the black and white stilts as subspecies, which is also weird in that they are so heavily into splitting every other bird under the sun.

Yes Barbary dove, I must have been sleeping....

I am mostly following the Heather & Robertson New Zealand field guide here and they do not split Pied stilt.... HBW doesn't recognize some relatively well established splits such as the stilts and swamphen and other birds which have a lot of variation throughout a large range (but thus also some intermediate populations....)

Here's the inverts, fish and herps I could identify from Vietnam! Some more might pop up over the next few days/weeks, but this should be the vast majority.

Missed this bird from my first list:

194. Tasmanian scrubwren Sericornis humilis

A mammal error from the first list, I put the wrong pademelon in:

6. Red-legged pademelon Thylogale stigmatica
should be:
6. Red-bellied pademelon Thylogale billardierii

Background on where I have seen animals in my list:
  • Obviously on or around Moonlit Sanctuary
  • Most of the waders were seen last January at Edithvale Wetlands and Stockyard Point, both great birding sites within 30 minutes drive of here.
  • A quick trip to Tasmania to Bruny Island and Melaleuca.
  • Business trip to the US and Canada allowed a bit of birding in Los Angeles and Toronto at either end. Two new duck species were seen at Lincoln Park Zoo on a brief visit. Toronto involved birding in the snow and ice - a first.
  • Perth, WA.

BIRDS
220 - Forest Raven (Corvus tasmanicus)
221 - Eastern Barn Owl (Tyto javanica)

AMPHIBIANS
3 - Southern Brown Tree Frog (Litoria ewingii)
BIRDS
--- Superb Lyrebird (Menura novaehollandiae) [heard]
222 - Australian Boobook (Ninox boobook)

  • Most of the waders were seen last January at Edithvale Wetlands and Stockyard Point, both great birding sites within 30 minutes drive of here.
Stockyard Point is one of my favourite birding spots too! Great for vagrant waders :)
