ZSL London Zoo ZSL London Zoo News 2019

I really like the giraffes at London, and I'd be very sad to see them go out of the species, especially in such an iconic building. Unfortunately, their paddock is far too small. If they were to stay in giraffes, I think it could only really be as a retirement home for a very limited number of females, much like they have right now. Not sure about the potential logistics of moving retired, and therefore older, giraffes.

Or phase out giraffes

If it's for any other reason than animal welfare, they would'nt dare surely? The Cotton Terraces are listed and it is well known that, until recently, giraffes regularly bred there. I think the primary reason for housing hybrids is that the building couldnt be renovated to adequately house a breeding Bull.

If giraffes leave London, thats simply another nail in the coffin for the Regents Park site IMO. What would they put there? Another crazy golf course? ZSL should then front up, be honest and invest in Whipsnades infrastructure and move the collection there.

Agreed - surely the Cotton Terraces actually serve a role nation-wide as a repository for non-breeding 'zoo' giraffes as collections move towards maintaining pure subspecies herds? I could see the Terraces being used for spare 'pure' bulls too, without any females, unless there are keeper safety issues that aren't immediately apparent to me.

london has bred giraffes for over a hundred years and probably bred more thanany other british collection, although i may be correceted on that point . longleat? giraffe are actually not a difficult species to manage or breed and the paddock is actually quite big enough if organised properly. no need to rennovate in irder to hold a breedi g bull. i hope that the idea is to manage the hybrids to extinction and then resume breeding a pure variety.the problem is how well they are cared for. last time i visited the giraffe paddock had about a dozen coloured balls hanging up for the giraffe but not a stick of browse. this neatly summarised all that is wrong with london zoos animal management these days.

In terms of space, can't they just open the gate between the Zebra and Giraffe paddock or move the Zebras somewhere else like Whipsnade? And what about the area where the Anteaters were at the back of the paddock, surely that can be open up as well.

they could easily take up all of those areas and actually it wouldnt be hard to fill in some parts of the moat and in effect go from the far end near the running track all the way to the tunnel. make sone sort of savannah with giraffe zebra antelope, maybe some birds like guinea fowl. or just keep the giraffe paddock as a giraffe paddock. its fine if managed properly

Am I mis-remembering or was the African savannah in fact once upon a time part of one of the Masterplans?

I've never had a problem with it personally but it is too small.

I am certainly not suggesting there are not easy options for further linking and extension of the paddock but it is larger than it first appears. At a time when breeding and longevity were both associated with London's giraffe, more animals lived in a smaller paddock; not saying that it is right, just that it worked. London needs giraffe and zebra. With the aquarium gone maybe a shored up Mappin Terraces would make a good African waterhole at the lower two levels with the goat hills as a backdrop? Giraffe okapi and pygmy hippo could stay where they are, zebra move and add another couple of species.

Hi,

Does anyone know if the Aye-Aye are back on display to the public after the refurbishment of their enclosure (I'm assuming / hoping that it has been done by now) ?

These were the only species that I missed on my last visit to ZSL (was gutted about that) and I'm considering paying a visit in a week or two to try and see them.

Thanks

Didn't see any on Saturday but the exhibit was open with no sign about them being offshow.

Saw it last month, same enclosure as before.

Last time I visited (in late August) the enclosure seemed to be going through some refurbishment. But I did get to see the majority of the other species kept in the nocturnal house, with the only exceptions being the Aye-Aye and the hedgehog tenrecs.

How about the Tree kangaroo ZSL used to have , do you know if it still being kept offshow?

ZTL says the female Goodfellow's tree kangaroo is still there. I have seen her a few times, but she can be elusive.

Excellent ! Where abouts is her enclosure at the zoo ? and this is on display to the public , right?
Unless things have changed recently it is down a corridor off the main rainforest area of the Clore, with a no entry sign at the entrance, but if you approached from the wrong direction you could be forgiven for not reading the sign!
She can sometimes be seen if you look through the window to the spider monkey exhibit
