BIRDS:

This weekend I tried to clean up some of the missing waterfowl on my list, plus chase after a few rarities.

At La Farge Sandpits, I couldn't find the vagrant White-winged Scoter, but I did pick up:

72 Canvasback - Aythya valisineria

At Lake Afton, I missed the Townsend's Solitaire, but I did find:

73 Red-breasted Merganser - Mergus serrator
74 Belted Kingfisher - Megaceryle alcyon
75 Cedar Waxwing - Bombycilla cedrorum

One more shot at La Farge Sandpits for the scoter as well as a vagrant Long-tailed Duck that showed up earlier in the day:

76 American Wigeon - Mareca americana
77 Great Horned Owl - Bubo virginianus

As you can see I'm doing GREAT at chasing rarities so far!

A little weekend birding landed me a few more year birds. On Saturday I went out to Lyons State Fishing Lake north of Emporia to a location that is known for wintering Long-eared Owls. Success! The rest of the birds were picked up at a few hotspots in and around Wichita.

78 Hermit Thrush - Catharus guttatus

80 Western Meadowlark - Sturnella neglecta
81 Ross's Goose - Anser rossii
82 Northern Pintail - Anas acuta
83 Green-winged Teal - Anas crecca

On Saturday, it was over 70 degrees Farenheit so I got my first herp of the year.

1 Red-eared Slider - Trachemys scripta elegans

Unfortunately, the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker that lives in Russell Square continues to elude me...

A 5 day trip to Poland wasn't quite as birdy as I had hoped it to be, but got me some additions regardless! In most of the national parks I spent hours without seeing a single bird (not exaggerating), but luckily the one bird I had really been hoping for miraculously showed up. 2020 will have to be a very good year for ural owl not to be one of my top 10 birds overall!

BIRDS:
106) Eurasian skylark, Alauda arvensis
107) Eurasian nuthatch, Sitta europaea
108) Eurasian treecreeper, Certhia familiaris
109) Hooded crow, Corvus cornix
110) Brambling, Fringilla montifringilla
111) Ural owl, Strix uralensis
112) Yellowhammer, Emberiza citrinella
113) Hawfinch, Coccothraustes coccothraustes

MAMMALS:
2) Red deer, Cervus elaphus

My totals for Poland are 36 birds and 2 mammals - Winter doesn't seem to be the best time of year to visit this amazing country. :)
