Mammal Orders and Families - how many have you seen?

I’m surprised you haven’t seen Opossums or Skunks, because they’re really easy to see in North America.

I don't remember seeing them in Toronto, which is the only North American zoo I've been to.

Rodents revised after I did some research into what each family actually consisted of :D
Didn't know what the blesmols were ;)

Family Nesomyidae (Madagascan and African rats and mice)
Family Cricetidae (voles, hamsters, New World rats and mice)
Family Muridae (Old World rats and mice)

I think that is now correct. :)

Toronto has Skunks in the children's zoo. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I remember you saying you used to live in Canada? I see both semi-frequently in the wild.

I lived there for a brief period of time, when I was young, and I only count animals I remember seeing. I don't remember seeing them in the zoo, the last time I went was when I was 9 and a half.
The Canada stint was rather insignificant. I just lived with my grandparents for a bit in BC and then left back to London. It was almost a holiday, although I didn't know how long I'd be there.

@amur leopard I distinctly remember you telling me and TLD that you had seen both wild and captive pika.....?

I don't think I claimed I had seen them in the wild, just gave a link to a video showing them in the wild. I haven't seen captive, no.

EDIT: Just checked over the thread in question - I never claimed to have seen them in either captivity or the wild, nor have I.

Ahem:

Should also mention, unlike yourself @TeaLovingDave has had the privilege of seeing pikas first hand....as have I!

Firstly, I have also seen pikas first hand IN THE WILD, so don't assume things please. (in Canada)

As for the other groups you omitted which I'd have expected you to have listed given the collections and wild locations you have talked about visiting:

Possums/cuscus
Gliders
Rat kangaroos
Mouse lemurs
Owl monkeys
Naked mole rats
Hutias/
Civets or Genets
Skunks

You've now retrospectively added the NMR and Hutia to be fair, but oddly deleted the Coypu :p

Here's my list:

Order Monotremata (monotremes)

Order Microbiotheria (Monito del Monte)
Order Paucituberculata (shrew-opossums)
Order Didelphimorphia (American opossums)
Order Notoryctemorphia (marsupial moles)
Order Dasyuromorphia (carnivorous marsupials)
Order Peramelemorphia (bandicoots)

Order Sirenia (sirenians)
Order Hyracoidea (hyraxes)
Order Pilosa (sloths and anteaters)
Order Cingulata (armadillos)

Order Dermoptera (colugos)
Order Scandentia (tree shrews)

Order Carnivora (carnivores)
Order Perissodactyla (perissodactyls)**
[Order Cetartiodactyla (artiodactyls and cetaceans)]
Order Artiodactyla (artiodactyls)
Order Cetacea (whales)

*not sure if I've seen any in captivity
**I've seen feral horse and donkey populations in Aus but nor sure that counts^^

I'll do families later, though I expect I'll be missing quite a few especially in the bats, rodents and whales department (and I don't keep list of captive species I've seen so we'll see how good my memory is or isn't^^). There's a similar discussion going on on mammalwatching too.

I reckon the three American marsupial orders would be doable if I ever made it to that continent (and at least Didelphimorphia is around in more European zoos again too).
Marsupial moles seem to be impossible atm. But seeing as that was the case with some other groups too just a couple of years ago you never know...

For the record, I have not seen pikas in the wild, much as I would like to. Don't know what was going through my head there.

I think I saw a New Guinea ground cuscus at Hamerton but I'm not sure, I'd have to check through old photos to see if they are there.
Do you mean night monkeys? I may have seen them at Vincennes, but I haven't visited Montpellier since they got them (I assume, given that I am sure they didn't have night monkeys in the Tropical house when I went last year.
Naked mole rats and hutias I have definitely seen, I just rushed a bit on my first one, especially through rodents and marsupials.
Shockingly didn't realise binturongs were part of the genet and civet family, so that is another one, thanks for pointing that out :)
I don't think I have seen gliders or skunks.

Thanks for the families I did miss. I'm not very good at these things I guess.

This seems fun! I don't know if it's just me but underlining/italicizing families is a little hard to notice so I'm going to color code my list and hope that works better! Black=captive only, Red=wild only, and Blue=both. I also underlined all Orders just for organization purposes.

Marsupial moles seem to be impossible atm. But seeing as that was the case with some other groups too just a couple of years ago you never know...
Did you ever try for marsupial moles? Or just decided it was impossible and left it.

At some point I'm going to go out in the desert and lie around for a few days or weeks and hope one sand-swims by.

Order Lagomorpha (lagomorphs) (if you only count wild species - the only species I've seen in captivity is domestic rabbit)
Domestics count, because it's just about seeing a member of the Family. So if the only cavy you've seen is a domestic Guinea Pig, you've still seen a member of that Family.

The only animal that is specifically left out is Human because literally everyone has seen them in the wild so it would have skewed the "Hominidae wild" result from "those who have seen wild apes" to "everybody".

If people want to count genuine ferals (e.g. feral goats or horses or whatever) under their wild counts then that's fine too.

I talked to Mark Carter (guide in Alice) back in the day about possibilities of seeing one but even he had only seen tracks in the years he was working out there. I talked to other guides but everyone had only heard stories about these magical aboriginal elders that knew how to look for them but then no one actually knew who those elders were or where they were etc. You get the picture^^

There was one sighting last year that was publicised (on fb) and I tried to contact whoever that was (I think it was some kind of aboriginal organisation, would have to look it up) but they never got back to me.

So I never specifically went looking for them because I just didn't have any leads.

My thinking on marsupial moles is that as far as we know they don't have physical burrow systems (they just swim through the sand) and we know that they are really small, and they probably have fairly short lifespans - so to me that means that they are probably very common because otherwise how would they find one another for breeding if the populations were tiny and dispersed?

So my technique would be to go to a place where they have been recorded, and then just wait. Night-time would be the most likely time they would be moving near the surface, and I think a night-vision camera would work better than a thermal imager (I reckon because of the sand temperatures at the surface the moles wouldn't show up effectively against it, whereas the movement of the sand would be much more visible through night-vision).

I wouldn't rate my chances highly, but it would be worth trying.
