Recently I got a message from a fellow birder that a hoopoe had landed in my local patch, so I went looking and saw it. Hoopoes are very scarce birds in the Netherlands (it was my first one in the country), and given that chasing rarities is basically impossible now it is a very welcome addition!

The rest is mostly common spring migrants, including one my favourite Dutch birds, the Pied Flycatcher.

I am now seeing Bluethroats daily and more and more spring arrivals and migrants are starting to pop up now. I went looking for a Black-crowned Night Heron this morning, but did not find it. I have seen this species on four continents, but never in the Netherlands (where it is a rarity), so never bothered to look, but beggars can't be choosers these days....
