Ah, yes. Thanks! I think this is one of the old videos I have seen in the past.
Also, it's quite sad that the hyena that appears in the video is actually presenting stereothypical behaviour. I think I was wrong about the exhibit she was housed in. The place shown in the video looks like one of the present crab-eating fox exhibits.
Oh, sorry, I didn't see it. I thought you said only Chapultepec and Leon kept them.

Yes, that is definitely a brown hyena, quite an impressive specimen too, I wonder what its story was

Yes, it is definitely one of the enclosures where the crab eating foxes are currently kept and the footage obtained before of the macaws and other bird aviaries sort of confirm this as they are still in use for birds now.
Yes, these enclosures are situated right next to each other, so it makes a lot of sense. As a big coincidece, I've seen an adult visitor yelling "Hello!! Hyena!" to the crab-eating fox when I was there last week. The spirit of this brown hyena might be still there making people confuse it with a tiny fox

Well they do call these animals the "ghosts of the Kalahari" so perhaps the ghost of the brown hyena still lingers there and plays mischief with peoples minds like some kind of Eshu type figure.

It'd be great if the AZA could get some Brown Hyenas. Of the all the hyenas they're the ones that look the most like dogs and could make interesting Etosha/Namibia themed exhibits. Plus they're highly intelligent like their spotted relatives.

. But I'm afraid it is really happening in SP zoo, so I think the only solution would be calling a priest to throw holy water in the entire place.

Yeah, it's actually a big coincidence. The woman calling the fox a hyena must be in youtube soon, once her kid seemed to be a daily vlog youtuber, and recorded the entire scene haha. Unfortunately, I don't remember the name he yelled his chanel has

I would also never have thought that this species would have become an animal common in several Mexican zoos and it happened so who knows what the future may bring ?

Returning to the brown hyenas, I hope the mexican breeding programs for them continue doing well. Even would like to see them exhibited in Brazil again, but although they are very interesting and beautiful animals, I think for now it'd be better to not increase the focus in exotic species in our institutions.

The 2 Pairs of Brown hyenas Arrived From Namibia to the Havana zoos in 2013 f(see above) , so they may still be of breeding Age . The brown hyenas in Mexico are then quite young.

With brown hyenas, who knows ? Some of these young hyenas could well be sent to Brazilian zoos in the future.

Interestingly, there is a record in the CITES Database for a Brown Hyaena being exported from Brazil to Mexico in 1996, described as "captive-bred" and the purpose as "personal" (i.e. probably for a private collection). There are no records for imports into Brazil, but the original animals - assuming the one left in the 1990s actually was bred there - may have been imported before 1976.
Yeah, receiving Hyenas would be less surprisingly than the gorillas who came from Howletts... They would be surely welcome; they are awesome animals, but I mean, starting a breeding program for them would maybe take resources and attention that could have been used to other native species programs...
