ZooChat Big Year 2020

No worries! We heard a few Gilbert's whistlers on the Nowingi and Konardin Tracks - one of which initially sounded quite like a Red-lored but turned out to be Gilbert's. Would be curious to see the bird in question though, as the species really is a range-restricted habitat specialist and the area around Hattah is quite intensively birded with very few, if any, verified records.
I'm more and more inclined to think it was a Gilberts, but as I said it really does not change much as they are both new species to me.

INVERTS:
17 - Red-veined darter, Sympetrum fonscolombii

A very fun day out yesterday at the Tamri river mouth got me one of my best personal finds!

21/11/2020 (Estuaire de l'Oued Tamri, Morocco)
BIRDS:
173 - Common gull, Larus canus

Common gull is not a true rarity per se in Morocco but it's a species that has only recently started to be more regular on the Moroccan coasts, especially in winter. A few years ago, it was still a species that needed homologation but nowadays with a little of luck and skimming through large gull groups at the right time of the year (which is exactly what I did), you are bound to find one.

37 species in total were seen at that spot, other highlights including eight Ferruginous ducks (second time seeing them ever), a Western swamphen (second time seeing one in my region), a Northern bald ibis, a very closeby Eurasian sparrowhawk as well as a group of at least nine Eurasian crag martins (only my third time seeing them, second time in Morocco)!

Well, I think that's it.
This was a pretty bad year for birding due to the pandemic and obviously I hadn't the opportumity to go abroad.
And nom the region I live in is for the second time closed,at least until the first days of December (and then many expect another lockdown...).
So, I'm pretty sure there won't be new additions to my lists (if we exclude some fishes I saw this summer without adding them). For next year, I have some projects I hope to realize (such as visits to London, Vienna, Stockholm and maybe a tour of Scandinavia) and I'll take birding more seriously.
See you in 2021.

i like how you just casual mentions that you saw what was once one of the rarest birds in Western Palearctic. do you see them often?

In recent times I've been paying some attention to insects, partly because we are starting a campaign to encourage people to plant a small "habitat garden" for "Butterflies, bugs and bees" in their back gardens. Anyway I was noting how many birdwatchers etc are now watching butterflies specifically. There are field guides available for many locations around the world (I think three for Australia) and the ease of observing them and the small number of species compared with other insect groups make it quite feasible. I wonder if it is worthwhile adding Butterflies as a separate category for next years "Big Year"?

In some years certain members have broken their invertebrate lists down into categories (e.g. lepidoptera, dragonflies, and so forth). I think Hix and DesertRhino have done that (from memory).

If you mean Northern bald ibis then yes, they're very very easy to see where I live. I see them nearly every time I go to Tamri whether it's on the road to the estuary or at the estuary itself. They're also super easy to see in Souss-Massa National Park and at some spots it is not super hard to see hundreds of them (like at Tifnit for ex.).

I can definitely understand how they'd be the highlight for anyone visiting the region for the first time but for me, although I absolutely love seeing them every time I do, they've become sort of casual birds haha

More inverts from in and around school also a couple identifications of inverts seen earlier in the week, today was an especially productive day.

Two fun twitches this week! Black guillemot is very rare with only just under 20 records, of which this was only the second twitchable ever.. Almost surprisingly so, given how regularly they're twitchable in all other Northwestern European countries (and they're native to half of them as well). Hume's leaf warbler comes from much, much further, but is also a bit more regular of a vagrant - those show up just about annually in Belgium, and are usually very easily twitchable, but this was my first in the country. Great stuff!

BIRDS:
289) Black guillemot, Cepphus grylle
290) Hume’s leaf warbler, Phylloscopus humei

On the way to Hattah-Kalkyne we stopped at Mt Korong in the hope of seeing painted honeyeaters. We did not see any notable birds, probably because we were there at mid-day. I did pick up one new butterfly which I have just confirmed.

Invertebrates

29. Caper white Belenois java

Left East Gippsland to head up to the mallee for a week now that restrictions have eased (Cicadabird was in Gippsland but the rest are mallee species). Travelling in a loop from Little Desert up to Murray-Sunset and finishing up in the Terricks, I got some excellent birds for the trip including four lifer birds and several rare Vic birds I've only seen once or twice before. I was targeting the family of Ground Cuckooshrikes that had been reported in Wyperfeld NP throughout the lockdown and was stoked to get excellent views of both adults and all three fledglings. Striated Grasswren was another highlight - this bird is highly sought after and I had previously only seen the back end of a bird running rodent-like along the ground from me. After searching through the Triodia-dominated mallee in Hattah for over five hours on Thursday with no luck, I spotted one from the car on the way back. We all hopped out and managed views of a grasswren carrying a spider in its bill running towards us!!! We were all within metres of the bird watching it out in the open. One of the most prominent birdwatchers in Australia was with us at at the time and he described it as best grasswren encounter he had ever experienced.

With 310 birds in Victoria for the year including two heard-onlies, I have passed last year's Victorian total of 303! I have also reached a total life list of 359 Victorian birds, all seen.

This species is incredibly rare and is only reported following good rain. It is known from only a few sites and is not reliably seen each year. Stunning little froggos!

-- Painted Honeyeater (Grantiella picta) [heard]

REPTILES

Two-part catchup post.

First - November's birds. We've been back in lockdown in England during November, but with a little more leeway for local travel for outdoor recreation than in the First Great Lockdown so birding in the local area has still been possible (I'm not sure the letter of the rules would actually prevent running out to the coast (for example) in fact, but it certainly wouldn't be in the spirit of said rules!). As such, over the month I've managed to pick up two local vagrants and fill in the two most obvious missing regular local species in siskin and partridge, keeping things ticking over rather nicely all things considered.

Birds:
203. Red-throated Diver - Gavia stellata
204. Grey Partridge - Perdix perdix
205. Eurasian Siskin - Spinus spinus
206. Little Bunting - Emberiza pusilla

(UK: 204)

Part two of catch-up - invertebrates. Haven't actually updated these since way back in July it seems. I've not, to be honest, been pursuing these as strongly as usual this year, what with... everything..! So what there are are what I've come across in pursuit of vertebrates. 55-58 are from my short trip to Vienna in August.

Invertebrates:
53. Narrow-bordered Five-spot Burnet - Zygaena lonicerae
54. Six-spot Burnet - Zygaena filipendulae
55. Silver-washed Fritillary - Argynnis paphia
56. Jersey Tiger Moth - Euplagia quadripunctaria
57. Common Wood White - Leptidea sinapis
58. Hummingbird Hawkmoth - Macroglossum stellatarum
59. Black Darter - Sympetrum danae
60. Devil's Coach Horse - Ocypus olens

61. Ground Beetle - Carabus problematicus
62. Common Darter - Sympetrum striolatum
63. Cream-streaked Ladybird - Harmonia quadripuncata

And all caught up!

:)

Hello, I never participated in the Zoochat Big Years before, but we're reaching the end of the year and it's unlikely that I will see more species this year. 2020 has been, for obvious reasons, much worst than other years regarding wildlife sights, and most of my sights have been in urban, peri-urban or intensive agricultural area (except the trip to Cadrete). I passed casually for this thread and I tought that it would be fun to add my little contribution.

Just for info about the "later observations": I consider the number of observations as the species seen in same place in same day, no matter how many individuals seens in different hours of the day. So an animal count as two observations if it's seen in two different (distant) places the same day, or in the same place in two days, even if can be the same individual.

I started being exhaustive in annotating observations after the pandemy, so common species seen in january, february and march are most often not included.

This is what I've seen in 2020:

Mammals:
1. Western roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) Las Inviernas 19th October 20

Xylocopa pubescens Los Barrios 13th October 20 (LIFER) very disgusting one, an absolutely magnific male was pollinating the endless sea of Dittrichia viscosa in a waste place of this village, but it only stop 2-3 seconds in a flower and after fly away one or two meters to another flower, this half dozen of times, making the following very difficult between the shrubs. Finally I got the blurriest photo I have ever made of any insect, just rubbish to be deleted. Finally the carpenter bee flied away without getting pictured with my camera. This is a very rare species very recently expanded to Europe (just the very extreme south of Spain, with still very few records) and I never heard about it until I phoned an hymenopteran expert friend after this sighting of such a spectacular species.
