i have a question about the animals at longleat,

what is the current situation with the lion prides now that kabir is gone?

And did the giraffe herd have any calves in 08?
*new series of animal park starts :)Mon 5th Jan:)

I know that one of Kabirs sons has moved to Blackpools new lion Enclosure and is now called Wallace. I do not think any ncubs have been born as they are waiting for the younger males to grow to maturity. All the lions in B pride i think are all related unless any other animals have been brought in. I hope this is useful to you. I do not know about the A pride Charlie must be quite old now about 11/12?
Regards

Yeah Kabir's old pride are all related and are the offspring of Luna and Yendi (the adult lionesses) their first born daughters Jadzira and Malaika were put on contraceptive implants to prevent breeding with Kabir, and their younger brothers.

No idea what the plan is with them, but all the males would have to leave before a new breeding male comes in

What if 1 or 2 of the brothers moved to Charlies pride - Pride A because by the time they are mature Charlie will be pretty old and may of sadly passed away and swap the remaining brothers in Pride B for 1 or 2 young breeding males from another safari park Woburn or Blair drummoned (not Knowsley as they are related to Longleat lions from a move about 6 or so years ago).
Would mean you would have two prides with completely inrelated breeding males and another safari park in the same situation with non related breeding males.

Charlie isnt as old as what people make out, he must only be around 8 or 9 years old. He was one of the final offspring of Ronnie (former dominant pride A male, then onto newquay) so he has a few more years in him anyway. Pride A is a retired group anyway.

Blair drummond already keep 3/4 males
Woburn could be a possibility, as their pride male looks like he is on deaths door anyway
Knowsley have more than enough males to get rid of

I'm surprised Newquay zoo haven't taken one on, to replace Ronnie. When i emailed them a while ago they said there was no plans for another male lion.

Looks like longleat may have to castrate the boys!

When i went to Longleat in 2001 Charlie was full grown so he must be around 12/13. I didnt know Pride A was a retired group would make sense
Thanks for that information.
I know Woburns Pride very well they had 2 Males Sly and Shane who arrived in 2003 sadly sly had died which means Shane the Pride male is 11. The introduction did not go too well as the pride had had the same two male lions Romeo and Legs Diamond who died in 2001 and 2002 both 15 and had been pride males for more then ten years. Both males got very beaten up by the females resulting in loads of scars and Sly missing the end of his tail.
It has been a bit dodgy after that but i feel that woburn have been over-breeding their lions slightly and it is a big pride of 16+.(with 15 or so possibly more being born)
Knowsley lions are related to the Longleat lions
Maybe West mids? they seem to be very succesful with there Normal lion Breeding. Or a zoo we will see what happens in the near future i think.
Lions in Safari parks seem to be breeding very very well at the moment.
Any information would be great i havent hear much about them except the odd thing on here and havent seen them for over 2 years.
Thanks

I know of plenty of males lions who could go to Newquay to live with connie why arent they doing this? waiting to build a new enclosure. I havent been to Newquay Zoo but i have heard its a small enclosure. Anybody know anything on this?
thanks for any info
Maybe Woburns Male Shane could go to Newquay and some of the Longleat Brothers go to woburn?
Woburn may not go through with it though.

Loads of mistakes in the Woburn pride reply if you read it please read again mistakes have been taken out and corrected! (last to this one by 2) Apologies.

Just to point out for everyone interested, an episode in the new series of Animal Park regarding the lions is on bbc2, 6pm on wednesday.
Quote: "Kabir, one of Longleat's oldest and most magnificent lions, faces a family feud that could end with a fight to the death".

Thanks for the information
That means either the series was filmed quite along time ago or they got the name wrong with another lion? Kabir died at Newquay after braking his leg.

I saw them filming this summer, I gathered it was for animal park as we saw Kate humble there.

Maybe they got the name wrong, Kabir died March last year at newquay and had been there for a few months before.

does anybody know if any giraffe calves were born in 08?
the last birth i heard about was with imogen and henry and that was in june 07.

Yes, there were around three or more births in '08. Giraffes are one of Longleat's annual breeders, along with Monkeys, Wolves, Sea Lions and Otters.

Has longleat stopped sending newsletters because i havent had one for some time...

from reading this article, it says that they are planning on bringing in a new male in the new yr, so i dont think that they have a male at the moment.

thanks for the info skoop102 :)
