How well do you know birds?

Not quite; the Barn Owl was first recorded breeding in New Zealand in 2008, and it might actually be an introduced species.

Common Moorhen?
I'm afraid not. The Common Moorhen is only known in New Zealand from one very poorly documented specimen record from the late 19th or early 20th century. I won't be surprised if the record gets rejected in the near future.

Which bird has false eye markings on its wings which it uses in various displays? It is one of only two species in its order, and has its own family.

I believe the first hibernating individual was found in the Grand Canyon! I’ll give someone else a chance to answer, until or unless I think of a good question to set!

That’s not where its hibernation behavior was discovered, though the Grand Canyon is within its range. The behavior was first formally described based on an individual found hibernating in Southern California.
