Bronx Zoo Bronx Zoo News 2021

Bronx does indeed have one sengi on-exhibit atm. It's (I'd assume it's one of the spare males) on-exhibit in the former Rock Cavy enclosure diagonal from the pygmy marmosets.

@ThylacineAlive do you know if the screaming hairy armadillos are still around? The first dark exhibit appears empty and unsigned to me and I haven't seen a water dish in there lately.

Brought my little cousin to the zoo yesterday so I didn't get a full visit but there's still plenty different to report from my last visit a month ago:

-The monorail was down for the first two hours of the day due to "maintenance issues", but eventually was reopened. There's still no sign of the Formosan Sika or Indian Hog Deer, but the Bactrian Deer were showier than ever. The operator also informed us that they've seen two new Gaur births in recent weeks: one three weeks old and one only about a week old.
-The Lesser Adjutant Storks are back on-exhibit, I haven't seen them all year.
-Bolivian Grey Titi, White-Faced Saki, Red-Rumped Agouti, and Southern Pudu make up the animals displayed outside of the Mouse House this summer.
-I managed to spot the Black-Naped Oriole in JW for the first time in years! Didn't know they still had one even.
-The Lesser Kudu were on-exhibit with the Thomson's Gazelles, another species I've not seen on-exhibit in years.
-Lesser Hedgehog Tenrec has replaced the Screaming Hairy Armadillos in the Mouse House.
-The Snowy Owls are off-exhibit with a sign on their aviary saying it's under renovation.
-The Pheasantry renovations seem to be completed, with most of the aviaries having been refurbished and replanted, and with all now housing birds again. Unfortunately, in terms of actual pheasants the aviaries are somewhat lacking, but they're supplemented this with the addition of Lesser Bird-of-Paradise, a newly formed pair of Plush-Crested Jay, Pink Pigeon, and a very young looking pair of Palm Nut Vulture placed in an especially enlarged section. The Sri Lankan Junglefowl has gone back on-exhibit here as well.

I did not make it to World of Birds so I'm unaware of any changes there.

I forgot to add that the electronic signs outside of the JungleWorld exit have finally been fixed.

I was there last Thursday as well :P
World of Birds - Kea exhibit in 2nd floor now is Lesser BoP's. Dont know if this change is new or not, since my last visit was1.5 years ago.
I didnt realize theres Screaming Hairy Armadillo in the zoo. I always skip mouse house .. X(

That's been there for a while, so Happy could spend her days outside on exhibit along with Patty without any issue at all.
Then how come when I passed by, Patty was the only one on exhibit? Also, I noticed that the fence doesn't come all the way.

The fence does come all the way, the gate was probably open as only Patty was on-exhibit this time for some reason. I believe I reported the addition of the fence on here last summer, and they definitely had both elephants on-exhibit when I first saw it. On my most recent visit last week I only saw one elephant on-exhibit.

Visited for the first time in two years last week. Was really a great visit and its crazy to think how it had been since I used to visit every month when I lived nearby. I understand some of my notes may be duplicates but wanted to share a mix of news and opinions of my visit. I was there open to close but still ran out of time to see Madagascar, part of African plains, and had to rush through the children's zoo.
  • I believe I saw the Formosan Sika Deer (3 of them) in the paddock behind the monorail track. They weren't on exhibit though.
  • Only Patty was on exhibit today, having access to both sides of the elephant exhibit.
  • For the first time in a while I didn't see a bachelor group of gorilla in CGF. Instead the first exhibit had 4 females (some of whom were either overweight or pregnant) and a family group of 10 in the second exhibit.
  • The family group of Mandrill (including the adult male) were mixed with red-river hog. It was nice to see them all together as I know in the past there have been management issues.
  • The bison herd is rapidly growing. At this point they must have around 50 animals between the pure-bred herd and the former exhibit herd (which I believe is still kept off display near the AQ bird house).
  • I was surprised to see grey gull's in the seabird aviary. Its been a long while since I had seen gulls in this exhibit.
  • The Sulawesi Hornbill appear to be nesting.
  • Palm-nut vulture are a great addition to the zoo, although I hope this is not there long-term exhibit and its height is inadequate.
  • Saw a spotted turtle in the turtle pond outside World of Reptiles.
  • World of Reptiles was looking great. Two of the exhibits in the crocodile exhibit had no inhabitants. I only saw a Cuban crocodile. The dwarf crocodile is quickly outgrowing its space though.
  • The former fennec fox exhibit in the Mouse House was empty and unsigned.
  • The World of Birds nursery was empty despite the zoo advertising otherwise. It appears that there was some maintenance work going on during my visit.
  • If you look down in the Toco Toucan exhibit you can see it is split into 2 exhibits for kiwi. I'm not sure if they always housed two birds in this exhibit.
  • The former kea exhibit was empty. It looks much more aesthetically pleasing though than when the kea were housed there.
  • One of the lesser-bird of paradise males was doing a full mating display. I was really excited to see this as I had only previously seen it in nature documentaries.
  • At least a dozen gelada were mixed with the Nubian ibex.
  • It was my first time seeing the renovation of Tundra's exhibit. The dholes were really active and the exhibit looks extremely lush. Overall a great minimal renovation of the space, although the moat looks a bit overkill with the dhole.
