I'm quite surprised that this question haven't came up in this forum yet, so I'd like to see your answers:)
Mine are probably Nilgai and Barbary macaque.

I started my lifelist two years ago, and have a lot of gaps in it still to fill, but mostly for animals I've seen previously, like African Elephants, Orangutans, and Common Hippopotamus. For animals I've truly never seen, I'm not sure what the number one most common would be, but probably some sort of Antelope species, as I haven't exactly seen many ungulates since I started paying attention to them.

I wouldn't say Nilgai are that common, certainly not in the UK, although I saw them in the 1970s at Marwell.
My most unsuccessful spot is Hippo. Even in collections that hold them, they were no shows on the day. Plenty of Pygmy Hippos, though.
Red Kangaroo would be the other, but plenty of Grey though.

Platypus for me. I have seen both kangaroo species and both hippo’s.
Both beavers would be cool to see along with armadillos and tanukis.

Beavers are a nightmare! I've more chance of seeing them wild in the UK now!
I've never seen a live badger. I regularly see them dead by the side of the road on my way to work so they are clearly quite common locally, but I've just never seen one live, zoo or not.

Saltwater Crocodile, Jaguar, Reindeer.
What country are you in, out if interest?
Reindeer are so common in the UK some people keep them just to hire out as part of a Christmas attraction.
It's really surprising some of the species mentioned-I thought they were ubiquitous.
I note nobody has said meerkat yet.....

I'm from the U.S. and unfortunately don't live near zoos that have these, and my family and I haven't traveled near a place that has these.

I’ve never seen Jaguar either, no-shows twice at Chester and paradise wildlife park don’t have theirs at the moment.

The only 'common' species I haven't seen are those considered common in other continents, particularly Australia! As far as European zoos go I don't have any 'common' species I haven't seen

I was going to say nilgai are nearly as common as red kangaroos in the USA, then saw the rest of your post :P So a better comparison, red kangaroos are basically our meerkats, they're everywhere (though not so common in AZA zoos). Places just starting out, or looking to move from a farm/petting zoo to holding some exotics, always end up with red kangaroos or bennett's wallabies, ring-tailed lemurs, and zebra and/or nilgai first. That being said, I ADORE nilgai, they are always so sweet and gentle.
