On November 5th, the zoo announced the death of a (0.1) bobcat named Sprite who passed in the week of October 24th-30th. She died at age 22 1/2 years and passed due to late-stage kidney failure.

Contributing to purebred efforts would be a great endeavor.

I was afraid they might be content with the new deer to occupy that space, so I was at least very encouraged that they ended their announcement with this sentence:
"The Zoo is currently pursuing adding new bison to this habitat and we hope to be able to share updates over the next few months."

Being content with the deer would never have been a serious option for the zoo long-term. Buttonwood has a long history with bison, and they were included in the current masterplan. Furthermore, director Keith Lovett is a smart zoo manager. He knows how to utilize space well, and understands that only two deer and some Waterfowl is not an effective use of such a large space. While I would not complain if the zoo decided to phase out bison in exchange for a different SSP ungulate species, the bison is the perfect fit for the North American theme of the area. Adding in new bison while Sarah was still alive wouldn't have been a practical option either, so pursuing new bison now that she passed was the best possible choice on the zoo's part, and it'll be interesting to see what kind of bison herd they get (pure-bred vs impure, bachelor vs breeding, etc.).

Wow! Good for him, he definitely did a phenomenal job at Buttonwood! Hopefully whomever his replacement is can continue continue ensure the masterplan gets completed and continues to maintain the zoo's incredible Waterfowl collection.
 
On March 23rd, the zoo announced that due to avian influenza, some of the birds have been taken off-exhibit, although they don't state which. Also, they announced that the duck feeders have been closed for the time.

Visit today for first time. It was free day at Zoo. Very busy but enjoyable. It charming, small zoo with active animals. Lots of small primates and some aquarium fish. Cat exhibits were nice size. Lots to climb for bobcat, cougar and lynx. I like their exhibits for cougar and lynx more than stone zoo exhibit. Cats were active and climbing their trees. Farm area had big yard for horse and for cow. Coyote had nice tent yard. They had white tail deer that were on the rocks and stream. Large yard for 2 deer. One elephant out and animal care was giving treat. Have never seen pudu. Large yard, small deer. Cool. The red panda was busy climbing. Beaver exhibit was empty of animal and water. Sign said no animal here. Otters very busy body. Fun to watch. I was surprised by rainforest area. So many monkeys, with bird, fish, turtle and ray. The aquarium side was busy, exhibits were very green. Need a scrub down. Black bear was busy. Saw one rolling around in hay. Fun zoo. The seal were very active. They had some bird outside rainforest. Very busy. Kids had a lot of fun. Will frequent again.
