Unpopular animals that you like

I also really like ungulates (especially Asian ones). Saiga, gaur, banteng, sika deer, Bactrian deer, nilgai, and Sambar deer are some of my favorites. Sadly, most people don’t even know what most of those species are and very few if any AZA zoos house most of these species.

The only zoo that has most those species is San Diego Zoo Safari park, while Bronx has Guar, Nilgai, and Sambar

Oops, I didn’t mean in it that way. I meant very few AZA zoos house any of the species on that list. And Bronx also holds sika and bactrian deer, in fact I’m pretty sure Bronx is the only holder of Formosan sika in NA.

Sorry I didn't mean to come across as rude, I was just giving more clarification to the facilities in NA that have those species

Oh no, I didn’t think you were trying to be rude LOL. I thought you misunderstood me and was just clarifying what I said. :)

Sika and nilgai are very common in the USA. The others are less common but they're around, other than saiga obviously.

Yes I know, that’s why I said AZA zoos. It would be nice if more AZA zoos housed all these species. It would also be nice if saiga made a comeback into NA but first let’s hope the species’ wild population grows a good amount.

Temminck’s golden cat - I’ve always been fascinated by these felids; though few visitors were ever interested in them, referring to them as “that cat we never see.” They were indeed poorly suited to display, with breeding success greatly enhanced by keeping the pair off display. Their lack of popularity with the visitors was one of the reasons for phasing them out of Australasia’s zoos; and I see North America have followed suit.

I've first seen Temminck's Golden Cat at the Washington Park Zoo, Portland, Oregon (which over the years changed their name to the: Oregon Zoo). They had a wonderful large nocturnal exhibit, of course no longer exists and species hasn't been kept at the zoo since then. Interestingly at that time of visit early 80's, the zoo had 3 beautiful kittens from the pair on display, and playing about as kittens do. 1983 to 1985 the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, in Colorado Springs, Colorado had a lone Temminck's Golden Cat on display which readily slept on shelf high in it's enclosure. Of course, the Cincinnati Zoo displayed a Temminck's Golden Cat in the remodeled cat house years before they remodeled it into the predators of the night house. Their golden cat often slept in the back of enclosure up top the rock cropping. The last remaining North American Golden Cat was displayed at Vancouver's Mountain Conservation Farm. They had rare species till they ran into trouble having animal issues. That lone golden cat was last one in this country.

The chances of Saiga returning to North America are very low to none. They have a longstanding reputation of being difficult to maintain successfully in captivity. See here for more re saigas in captivity: Are These in Captivity?

Come to the U.K. We have loads of Japanese Sika living wild.
