Pygmy hippos in captivity

Surely interesting, can you elaborate.

I know of Pygmy hippo in Johannesburg, Oudtshoorn, Pretoria's 2 zoos and the Rhino and Lion Reserve in Gauteng.

Sure, Mystic monkeys and feathers wildlife park (which is a private Zoo) breeds pygmy hippos, they have provided to some private collection but they're not public so I don't too much about it. Other than that the zoos that have them today:

Mokopane Biodiversity centre (7 or 8)
Lictenburg Wildlife centre (2)
Pretoria Zoo (5)
R and L Park (2)
Jo'burg Zoo (3)
Cango Wildlife Ranch (oudshoorn) (2)
Mystic monkeys and feathers wildlife park (2)

Toronto has announced female pygmy hippo, Penelope, will be heading to Houston just as soon as covid restrictions at the border allow. She should be able to breed with their young male fairly soon after arrival. As the only offspring of two founders bringing her online as a breeding female is important plus it frees up space in Toronto for a sibling.

In July 45-year old female Western pygmy hippopotamus (Choeropsis liberiensis liberiensis) Paula passed away due to age realted illnesses. She arrived from Burgers Zoo in 2017, currently Zoo Hoyerswerda only has a 36-year old male Western pygmy hippo.

Chimelong IS the only zoo in mainland China currently has pygmy hippos. They had about dozens individuals. Chimelong is known for breeding rare species. I’ve first seen them at 2007.

Last week 2,5-year old female Western pygmy hippopotamus (Choeropsis liberiensis liberiensis) Mudiwa (*12/11/2020) has been send to Parc animalier d’Auvergne, this is a new species for this zoo!
Zoo Duisburg now has the breeding pair Atu and Ayoka left.

In the South Korea, a pair of pygmy hippos at the Seoul Zoo. The male is named 'Hamong' and the female is named 'Namong'.

Hamong is known to have been born on June 17, 1983, but the studbook uploaded by Vogelcommando does not have a matching pygmy hippo. According to that studbook, it is presumed that male Maikel, born on March 10, 1977, is Hamong. But one thing for sure, Hamong is blind by his old age.

When a female who lived with Hamong died in 2013, the Seoul Zoo brought in Julie, a female who was born on June 9, 2012, from the Colchester Zoo in 2015. her name is current Namong.

As far as I know, Hamong is rarely displayed outdoors because of the his visual impairment, so usually only Namong is outdoors. Seoul Zoo refers to pygmy hippo as "kkoma-hama", this Korean word can be interpreted as a "baby hippo". Because of this Korean name and the appearance of Pygmy hippo, almost all visitors to Seoul Zoo think pygmy hippo is just a young hippo. What a pity.

It is late, but I update the situation in South Korea. Ha-mong died on December 30, 2020. Since then, Na-mong has existing as the only pygmy hippo in South Korea until now.
