Naming my child(ren)

Despite my doomer outlook towards the world and my self-hatred, I still dream of being a father of some tiny people of my own (maybe around 3). I acknowledge that being a father is a tough job and that I still have a very long way to go, but I am sure a man can dream, right?

One think I think about when dreaming about having children, it is the name I’d be giving to them. There’s many to choose from but I can’t make enough children to give all those names to. But regardless many names come to mind when it comes to names I’d give to a child. And here’s my list.

Samuray (I first heard this name through a family friend of mine who’s cousin bears the name. The name is a combination of the words Samur (word used to describe mustelids) and ay (moon). When I asked what the name would mean in Turkish I was told that it was used to refer a crescent moon. Sounds cool.)

Hayko/Heiko (I like how it sounds)

Cengiz/Genghis (I like how it sounds)

Kamuran (sounds cool)

Lark (I think it sounds cute)

Wren (I think it sounds nice)

Suna (girls name which means shelduck in Turkish. Sounds nice and easier to pronounce than Ceylan (gazelle in Turkish) which is the only other Turkish girls name I know that’s based on an actual animal)

Sidney (sounds good)

Chester (sounds good and while I am yet to go there, I would get out of my way to actually name my child after the zoo)

Karsak (Turkic word for corsac fox. It just sounds cool.)

Lale/Tulip (despite sounding different, both mean the same thing (the flover) and I would give both names to the same individual if possible)

Joseph (while that is the name of my psychotic roommate when I was in FL, it is also the name of the teacher who changed my perception of math. I am not a math fan but I at least am able to respect maths thanks to this teacher.)

Burgundy (to be fair, this is a name that I would give to a female Eurasian boar if I ever have one. But it still sounds cool on a human)

These are the names that I can think of so far. I might expand the list more once I remember more. Feel free to call these names cringe or suggest names that may be great.

You could name them after any good television or book character or creature. Either that or a famous musician from before the nineties. Just ideas.

I’ve got a few children (including a new son born this month!) and can offer some insight, though names are very much down to personal preference at the end of the day. :)

It’s good to strike a balance between mainstream (names in the top ten for your country) and completely unique names. The ideal would be having a name that’s a little unusual, but not weird for the sake of weird - Chester is a good example from your list. The name Decimus was considered for my youngest son (after Decimus Burton) but was discounted for being a little too out there.

I’d avoid any name that has a single point of identity. An example would be the trend in the US a few years back of people naming their kids Miley. It’s obvious they were just copying, which isn’t a good look. I really like the name Beauden, but I’ve never heard it on anyone but the All Black and personally would avoid it for that reason - the kid would have a lifetime of being asked if he was named after an (albeit admirable) individual.

Check the meaning of the names you like. Bowen was initially a favourite of mine for my latest son’s name, until I found out the name means “Son of Owen” (my name isn’t Owen).

And because it would give people the incorrect impression you only have *TEN* illegitimate spawn scattered around the country? :P

As I am not in a English speaking country/city, my parents didnt gave me an English name only a chinese name. So i guess i would do the same to my child too if I have one, let him choose the most suitable one to himself.

Idk why I forgot about Noah before publishing the thread but Noah is also a name that I like. So I’d probably call my som Noah if I ever have one. The story of Noah (or a caricaturized version by Walt Disney) is what got me into animals when I was small.

@Zoofan15 I started this thread with the hope that I’d get some suggestions from members of the community who had an experience raising children so I would like to thank you for your advice. I guess the majority of the names I chose are better off being middle names, while my partner chooses a safer first name for the kids (hopefully it won’t be a case of copying like the case of Miley you mentioned.) I do think that meaning is an important factor regarding names, especially those that sound unconventional for the average person such. And when the meaning is good then I feel more excited to name the child that name (which is the case of Karsak, Samuray, and Suna).

Also other names I'd add to my list are:

Noelle (idc that I am not from a Christian family, I just think that the name soounds cute)

Brock (I llike it's meaning, or at least the meaning I know)

Wyatt (sounds like a cute name)

I would go for names that represent your ethnic backround, are not tied too much to any famous historical/popular person and have good or neutral meaning, ideally tied to nature.

Personally, I dislike names representing any particular religion. You don´t know what your child will decide to believe in when it grows up.

And I would not go with any English name (unless that is your family language), English names are used for dogs and cats in Czechia, not for children. Btw TOP3 dog names in Prague from latest dog tax census are Ben, Max and Betty.

As an American-born Indian, I have an Indian name, the interesting thing is, my middle name is a Christian name, as my mother’s side of the family is Christian (they come from Kerala, a state which has a lot of Christian Indians). This blend is certainly something I find interesting. My middle name is also the name of my grandfather, who died in his 40s.

Thank you for your suggestions Jana.

While I would consider using ethnic names I don't think there's that many Turkish names that I want to use on my children because I am trying to leave Turkey or anything related to it to the past as much as I could.

Now idk what the future hold for me regarding where I will marry or who I will marry but I feel like I have a great chance of staying in the United States, so I don't think giving my children english names would be an issue despite the fact that I grew up speaking Turkish. But if I don't end up living in the US (or any Anglo nation) the name I would give to my children would probably be the middle name while my partner chooses the first name.

When it came to naming our children, my wife and I chose their names based on what sounded "right" (hard to explain) for eqch individually and with a certain kind of foresight, based on personal experience.
People (children in particular) are often dumb and cruel when it comes to unusual names. Back in the days of my childhood, my first name used to be kinda uncommon where I grew up. Which resulted in plenty of stupid teasing, misspelling, misunderstandings...I've learnt to live with it and do like my first name, but for the sake of your children, you should keep in mind that this choice is going to impact their whole lives.

Hmm... Well if any of the names I have sound "weird", then I hope my wife could come up with a "safer" name. Otherwise the best I can hope fore is to have my child be carefree and not care about what others think in an early age. Regardless, I appreciate your input Batto

Heh. Le funne meem. Jokes aside I think that Rowan is a nice name. I sort of forgot about it until I saw this post. Rowan would be a name I'd consider for my child.

Other names I'd consider for any spawn of mine would be.

Molly (sounds cute)

and Kodiak (Kodi for short. I just like how Kodiak sounds)

I have an Indian name, so most of my friends and teachers pronounce my name wrong.

Same lol. My name is Harish and it's pronounced Har-ee-sh. I've heard Hair-ish (most common one), Harsh, and even Hamish (ended up being my nickname for the rest of the year ) from a sub one time. Don't even get me started on my last name, it's 13 letters long and only some of my closest friends have learned to pronounce it correctly.

If someone was named Rowan most other people would probably think they were named after Professor Rowan from Pokemon. I would not consider that a bad thing, personally.
