Santa Ana Zoo at Prentice Park Santa Ana Zoo News

Accreditation options:

They can appeal (which they are), they can hope for a miracle of money to get all exhibits updated in a year, or they can just go for ZAA accreditation instead. I have not been to this zoo in over a decade, but I do remember the cages as being pretty low quality. I think AZA is perhaps right in this case, but I do understand (and possibly agree) with C18's comment above (about their uneven treatment of zoos). I also know based on private conversations with some zoo officials (NOT any of the three zoos named and NOT either of my local zoos) that some within AZA are fed up and ready to leave - including some really, really big names.

A few years from now, visitors to the Santa Ana Zoo may be able to watch monkeys frolicking above them on an aerial trail system, or get a close-up view of giant river otters gliding through the water.

Redesigned exhibits, welcoming new species of animals and more visitor attractions are part of an estimated $70 million plan for the zoo’s evolution over the next 20 years.

The first master plan for the zoo since 1990 includes a new veterinary hospital and education building, a primate forest area, a “twilight house” with walk-through bat observation cave, more wildlife shows and demonstrations, and a relocated main entrance with more parking.

I'm glad they're renovating the Monkey Row into something more natural.

I've also hear they're going to add a ferris wheel in the farm region. Can't say I like it, given that the space could've gone to a new exhibit.

Is Santa Ana near Westminster? How big is it?
Yes, Santa Ana is just east of Westminster. The zoo is very small, less than ten acres. It is right next to Interstate 5 (as in the zoo fence is right above the freeway and cars can see the sign as they drive by).

So it is a newczoo, but just a small one.

Ferris wheel mentioned in post 26 above is now open.
A giant anteater was born November 26, 2019, and is starting to go on exhibit with its mother.
The zoo has opened a BeanSprouts cafe, which is a chain of cafes geared specifically towards families with young children. The cafes are located in various zoos, childrens museums, science centers, etc. Here is their website: Home
