Central Park Zoo Central Park Zoo news

I was at the zoo a few weeks ago. Is it just me or is this Dumeril's Ground Boa, uh, very chunky?

Not just you. Definitely looks overweight. My best guess is that it's a [relatively recent?] rescue and is in the process of losing weight. Its sadly extremely common that pet snakes become overweight as their inexperienced owners feed them too often.

Catching up on a bit of penguin-related news, the zoo’s first Macaroni Penguin chick hatched in June 2020 (wasn't reported on this thread). The Macaronis arrived in 2017 and the chick was foster raised by a pair of Chinstrap Penguins. Also, two Chinstrap Penguins hatched in early July of this year according to their social media. The article mentions below that the exhibit has around 70 penguins on-display.

Is Betty still the lone grizzly bear at Central Park. if she is do they plan on keeping the species after she passes away.

Does anyone have any news or updates on this?
Betty unfortunately passed on last year, and there's signage at the exhibit (no photos unfortunately) indicating that the zoo plans to put Amur tigers in the space. From POLAR BEARS to Grizzly bears to Amur tigers...

What an interesting upgrade. It wouldn't make the worst tiger habitat, though I am surprised they aren't planning on getting more Grizzly Bears or bringing in a new SSP bear species like Sloth Bears. I wonder if they will be taking in surplus cats from Bronx or elsewhere or if Bronx will be shifting to Malayan only. I'd imagine the former.

I think it would have been better to keep it as a grizzly bear habitat. Bears gave the Central Park Zoo more animal diversity than tigers would, as they already have Snow Leopards for a large cat species.
At the same time, this quells guests' concerns about "where's the lion? How come there's no lion?" I am aware that a tiger is a completely different animal, but it's a good substitute, and honestly fills the gap between Temperate Territory and Polar Circle quite nicely. Now if only they'd get Baikal seals...

@StoppableSan , may I ask where the Amur Tiger specific signage was? I visited the Zoo today and all of the signage just says Exhibit is closed for improvements.
Take this with a grain of salt, but the two Zoo employees I asked said more grizzly bears were coming, with one saying three females would arrive from the Bronx Zoo specifically.
As a lifelong Central Park Zoo visitor, I would be thrilled if Amur Tigers took over the space, would just love to hear any more information you may have!

This would make a lot more sense, and I do believe Bronx has three females bts.

A friend of mine, @Nicholas LionRider went on a recent visit and mentioned that tigers would go in that space, but he couldn't recall which viewing area said anything about tigers.

I would personally prefer Andean bear, if a few more climbing structures were added. But I understand why grizzly's make sense, given the zoo already has them. Amur tigers would be ok in there I guess but its not ideal imo and a downgrade from all three of Bronx’s exhibits.

Andean Bear wouldn't be all that out of the picture either idt given how well Queens is breeding them, but I think they'll be sticking to Grizzly Bear.

My thoughts as well. Plus better exhibit animals in my experience. But Grizzly's seem like a certainty, just hope these are a little more active then their last pair.
