The year list is growing slowly but steadily still. A few local walks netted me a couple of birds, including my first ever Middle Spotted Woodpecker in my local patch. After the wryneck last year, I have now officially seen all six Dutch woodpecker species there. Another great bird was a Barn Owl, which I saw when driving home late at night. The last five years I saw exactly one Barn Owl each year, so was quite happy to be able to put in on the list already. The mouse was seen on my first zoo visit of the year.

Birds
117. Brambling, Fringilla montifringilla
118. European Goldfinch, Carduelis carduelis
119. (Western) Barn Owl, Tyto alba
120. Middle Spotted Woodpecker, Dendrocoptes medius

Mammals
7. House Mouse, Mus musculus

Finally, new critters! All bugs, alas. No new birds, which is surprising. On the plus side, the first butterfly of not-quite-spring-yet!

Invertebrates

9. Cabbage White Butterfly Pieris rapae

10. Phanias albeolus Phanias albeolus

11. White-winged March Fly Bibio albipennis

12. Winter Ant Prenolepis imparis

Well another day another failed roadrunner attempt, my nemesis bird 7 years running (no pun intended :p). Everyone else sees them, but they dislike me for some reason apparently (I swear I'm not a coyote!) Saving grace of the otherwise unworthwhile attempt was a Loggerhead Shrike posted up in a short tree, a species that has gotten harder to find in recent years.
A few other species from the last few days as well. Just missed a fish to some annoyance, and still missing several species I ought to have by now.

Mammals:

6. Brazilian Free-tailed Bat (Tadarida brasiliensis)

Birds:

58. Great Egret (Ardea alba)
59. Western Meadowlark (Sturnella neglecta)
60. Loggerhead Shrike (Lanius ludovicianus)
61.House Sparrow (Passer domesticus)

Well slowly but surely the species are coming in. Nothing of particular note other than a Peregrine Falcon, which was a nice treat when I wasn't expecting it. Pesky Pacific Treefrogs have been noisy but haven't been able to spot one yet.

Birds:

62. American Crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos)
63. Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo)
64. Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus)
65. Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus)
66. Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias)
67. Red-shouldered Hawk (Buteo lineatus)

Reptiles:

3. Sharp-tailed Snake (Contia tenuis)
4. Southern Alligator Lizard (Elgaria multicarinata)

Invertebrates:

6. Jerusalem Cricket (Ammopelmatus fuscus)
7. Garden Snail (Cornu aspersum)

A large snowstorm has meant that looking for waterfowl on the few lakes that remain free of ice has been especially productive (For me at least), yielding 3 lifers for this past week.

Birds:
26. Gadwall (Mareca strepera)
27. American Kestrel (Falco sparverius) (Lifer)
28. Lesser Scaup (Aythya affinis) (Lifer)
29. American Wigeon (Mareca americana) (Lifer)

30. Wood Duck (Aix sponsa)
I'm quite happy about the group of Redpolls I saw up a sweet gum tree. It is an irruption year for them, and they are coming to central Illinois in large numbers following the food supplies.

Birds:

31. White-Throated Sparrow (Zonotrichia albicollis)
32. American Goldfinch (Spinus tristis)
33. Common Redpoll (Acanthis flammea) (Lifer)

Picked up a few raptors and another mammal on my traveling between locations again. Unfortunately it remains to be seen how much birding I actually get up to in the next few weeks; the winter cold of the East Coast is not my friend.

Birds
34. Turkey Vulture (Cathartes aura)
35. Black Vulture (Coragyps atratus)
36. Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis)

Mammals
2. White-tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus)

As I sort of expected, bad winter weather combined with real-life obstacles prevented me from doing almost any birding the past month. I'll be en route to greener pastures yet again in the coming days, so before I do I'll add in the couple finds I've gotten - one in the rafters of a grocery store, the other flocking around a local lake where I was looking for waterfowl.

Birds
37. House Sparrow (Passer domesticus)
38. Ring-billed Gull (Larus delawarensis)

31 - Great tit, Parus major
32 - Northern shoveler, Spatula clypeata

4 - House mouse, Mus musculus.

Had a lovely day at the London Wetland Centre - some nice sightings, and more than a few lifers in there as well!

33 - Eurasian teal, Anas crecca
34 - Little grebe, Tachybaptus ruficollis
35 - Northern lapwing, Vanellus vanellus
36 - Common snipe, Gallinago gallinago
37 - Common gull, Larus canus
38 - Great black-backed gull, Larus marinus
39 - Eurasian green woodpecker, Picus viridis
40 - Peregrine falcon, Falco peregrinus
41 - Cetti's warbler, Cettia cetti
42 - Long-tailed tit, Aegithalos caudatus
43 - Common starling, Sturnus vulgaris
44 - Water pipit, Anthus spinoleta

46 - European greenfinch, Chloris chloris
47 - European goldfinch, Carduelis carduelis
48 - Eurasian siskin, Spinus spinus
49 - Common reed bunting, Emberiza schoeniclus.

Almost halfway to my goal, and my first lifers of the year. Also just got a membership to the WWT facilities so with any luck I'll be able to make it Slimbridge or Arundel before long and add to my total once more. Missed out on Jack snipe, Oystercatchers and Stonechats reportedly hanging around the wetlands but overall fairly pleased with the turnout, and hopefully will return in the spring and summer to boost totals!

Going to get started on here early this year.

Just got back from 6 nights in Mexico- 3 of which dedicated to mammal-watching!
I'm expecting a baby in April!! So obviously trips will trail off haha.
