North American Common Hippopotamus Population

That’s interesting. Do you have any idea whereabouts exactly?

EDIT: I found out that Wallace came from a Safari park in Jakarta. Any more info adding to this would be appreciated.
That would have to be Taman Safari either Bogor - most likely (Bogor is the highlands overlooking the lowlands and the sprawling city in the distance - or Prigen TS Dua.

How did you find out about the Safaripark source?

I did a Zoochat search and found these quotes:
There hippo is just turning three this year so they are still trying to find him a mate. He came from the safari park in Jakarta

I saw on TV that their single hippo came from Indonesia.

I have no idea how many hippos Taman Safari Bogor currently have. Definitely multiple.

Possible Common Hippo Transfers in 2022:
Winnie (Memphis) to Winston Wildlife Safari
Mahali (Denver) to San Diego
Water Lily (Woodland Park) to Milwaukee
Guadalupe (Woodland Park) to Cheyenne Mountain (Albuquerque's male is 49 and is to old to have another calf)
Kasai and/or Zambezi* (Cheyenne Mountain) to Disney's Animal Kingdom *= Zambezi's son Omo was inbred by an aunt-nephew mating, and Guadalupe is unrelated to Biko*
Tombi (St. Louis) to San Antonio
Bubbles (Fort Worth) to DAK
Uzazi (Memphis) to Honolulu

Are you just making these up or do you have proof that these transfers are all going to occur this year? That seems like a lot for a population that has experienced very little moving around and breeding in recent years.

It Says "Possible Transfers" not "Certain Transfers", and I personally think that maybe a maximum of 4, or maybe 0 transfers will occur. The only transfers I can definitely see happening are Mahali from Denver to San Diego or Kasai from Cheyenne Mountain to a larger facility, presumably Disney's Animal Kingdom.

Well, it's kind of pointless to post a whole list of transfers that aren't certain or even rumored. I honestly doubt very many of the transfers you have listed will occur with the exception of the Woodland Park girls being transferred out. I don't think Denver would want to send out Mahali, their only hippo, and phase out the species. It would make more sense to me if a young cow was sent there to breed with Mahali and continue Denver's successful breeding program. Plus, if Mahali is sent to San Diego, I don't see that happening for numerous years as Amahle is too young for breeding and Funani is probably too old. As for Kasai, CMZ built their facility with the idea of housing several breeding females in mind so I don't think she'll be sent away. She's not really that genetically valuable either so transferring her for breeding isn't necessary either.

None of them I really see happening..

I can see Boipelo of Dallas moving to Denver to mate with Mahali, since Dallas wanted 1 male and 1 female, and Adanna and Gus are similar in age, so they would work better together.
I can also see Topeka sending away Vision to another zoo, maybe Kansas City.

Vision is Topeka’s only hippo, why would they want to send him away? He’s from a decently represented line too, and he’s still in his younger years so why this wouldn’t be important, at least now.

I think we all of these “Possible Tranfers” we cannot forget that with Covid transfers with animals (Large animals especially) have really tighten with borders within states and getting that paperwork done to transfer a large animal such as a hippo. Before to my knowledge just to transfer a gorilla pre-Covid it took a years worth of paperwork and permits, so imagine that of a hippo’s transfer. So the transfers are possible but super duper unlikely.

"A year's worth" is a bit of a stretch for how long it takes to arrange a large animal transport. It can seem that way in some cases because transfers are usually talked about long in advance (usually coinciding with the publication of a B&T plan) before any actions are actually taken. In cases where they need to happen quickly, or when both parties are motivated, they can be accomplished very quickly, depending on the requirements of the states involved and the preships wanted by the receiving zoo.

I think Topeka should phase out hippos or build a new hippo exhbit with more hippos and underwater viewing. I visited Topeka Zoo in 2019 and they said they were also planning to get rhinos in the coming years.

I don’t think Topeka will phase out hippos unless their current hippo passes away or their habitat is in dire need of renovation to accommodate hippos per the AZA. I can only imagine how much more costly an underwater viewing would be for a hippo, let alone a few. Needing to have impeccably clear water we can view hippos would certainly take up more real estate due to the needed filtration systems.

Given a choice between the two, I'd rather watch a larger group of hippos in an exhibit without underwater viewing, with a larger land area and a herd size that increases the likelihood of seeing interactions and social behavior, than watching one or two hippos sit in a tub with underwater viewing. I think underwater viewing is really cool, and I certainly remember how impressed I was the first time I saw it as a kid, but I was even more impressed watching hippos in the wild in a natural setting, which needless to say did not include pristine water and windows. We need to get past the idea that it's the only way to exhibit hippos.

These hippos in USA zoos should NEVER be recommended to breed again. *(#) is their age as of December 31 2022*
Lu (61) (Homosassa Springs)
Patti (53) and Happy (41) (Milwaukee)
Sweetie Pie (51) and Pudgie (50) (Sedgwick County)
Moe (49) (Albuquerque)
Frankie (47) (Wild Wilderness Drive Through Safari Gentry Arkansas)
Cindy (33) and Unna (33) (Philadelphia) (neither has had a calf before and they are a little too old to become a first-time mother)
Jonsey (38) and Daisy (38) (Fort Worth) (same as the 2 Philadelphia Zoo hippos)

All of which, most likely won’t. I can see them still trying maybe with Cindy and Unna as there’s still a slim chance, but definitely not with the others.

Also Funani (38) at the San Diego Zoo shouldn't breed again.
