North America Western Lowland Gorilla Population

Does anyone have any idea who the three may be? I have been thinking and there aren't a lot of obvious answers. I think if they are setting up a non breeding group with Jumoke then possibly Ndume, Chewy and Mara from Cincinnati may be strong contenders. They dont and wont have an infant in the group. All are super low ranking genetically so it could set up a good retiree group. But then again I was spending time thinking of a group with a male and 2 females to move without offspring. They could be pulling individuals from two or more places to make up the group which would open up far more options. Just wondering if anyone had any strong suspicions or better yet facts.

Also speaking of lone females has anyone heard what might be done with Catherine at Little Rock so she is back in a social group?

Since Woodland says "to form a new family group with our senior female gorilla, Jumoke" I don't think they will move any existent troop, especially because would be way more easy to move Jumoke and get a bachelor troop.

I don't think this troop will be a retire troop, I believe they would call like this.

The recent troops are usually form by a Silverback, a older/dominant or non breeder female, and two young breeding females:

* Sedgwick: Matt - Kivu (older), Kigali and Barika
* Audubon: Okie - Alafia (older), Praline and Tumani
* Como: Schroder - Nne (non breeder), Dara and Alice (now at Little Rock)
* Kansas: Radi - Tufani (non breeder), Makari and Makena
* Omaha: Tambo - Muke (older), Timu and Bambio
* ABQ: Kojo - Matadi (older), Samantha and Nia
* Toledo: Kwisha - Johari (non breeder), Kitani and Sufi
* Dallas: Subira - Shanta (non breeder), Hope and Megan
* Gladys: Mbundi - Penny (non breeder - or they thought), Martha and Margaret
* Memphis: Mwelu - Penny (non breeder), Kwizera and Kebara
* Riverbanks: Cenzoo - Acacia (non breeder), Kazi and Macy

There are some females that already grown and need to be place somewhere else:
* Lilly
* Merry Leigh
* Kambiri
* Patty
* Nayembi
* Sia
* Gladys
 
Im really baffled as to why a bachelor group wasn't recommended there.
I thought space for males was a concern for AZA?

Yes, space for young males is a huge concern for AZA, but Jumoke has a strong personality, difficult to fit in any of the existent troops, so AZA created a new troop around Jumoke.

They're avoiding multiples family troops at the same facility, only "special" facilities have more than one family (Atlanta, Columbus, Cincinnati).

Maybe this troop could be in another facility like Denver, that "lost" their family troop recently.
 
@Chatt Wolf I agree with you. I highly suspected they would have moved Jumoke into a group elsewhere to open up space for a new bachelor group. There are a ton of young males coming up that will need that home. To hear she was going to be the first member of a new family group was a surprise. Not a bad surprise just a surprise.

@b_g_19, you might be right about forming a totally new group with her serving as the older mentor to young girls becoming first time moms rather then welcoming a silverback and two of his females. The choices for that option without offspring was pretty darn limited anyway. Though if they could juggle some older animals it wouldnt be bad to do a retiree group too and free up space in existing groups, particularity if you could pull a silverback you no longer needed breeding.

Ultimately it feels like a wait and see what happens. I would think given the announcement the new gorillas will start to arrive in the coming months so really wont be super long before we find out what kind of group we are looking at and who is in it.
 
I mean first of Ozzie being dead is terrible for Atlanta. He was so much a part of the zoo. Wonder if he in a way died of a broken heart after loosing Choomba. I prefer to think of it that way. Seems sweeter then sad that way.

The death of Ozzie though does have benefits. It would allow the SSP to pull another older silverback that really isnt needed to contribute to the population anymore and move him into a retiree group. For argument sake, say they were done with Taz breeding because he's now overrepresented, they could shift him to the retiree group which would free his ladies up for a more genetically valuable male. I just picked Taz because he is already there. They could also pick one of the behavioral non breeding males who live alone and move them there for socialization purposes. Its really just a free space they can place a silverback they don't need.

It is probably likely they will receive another young female gorilla.
 
If you notice, Matadi isn't part of this troop anymore... I don't know if she moved or just alone.

She's been living on her own for quite some time now due to her not getting along with some of the other gorillas, I believe it was Kojo who she had issues with. I hope they receive some more gorillas to accompany her or at least send her somewhere else to join a retirement troop.
