Potawatomi Zoo Potawatomi Zoo News

A baby bison was born 15 days ago, but I haven't seen it out since and the zoo hasn't said a word, so I'm not sure if it survived. There is a sign out with a giraffe on it, they plan to get a Male and female next season and hope to have them out late summer/fall. And the chimpanzees have moved to a different zoo to be part of a bigger social group, their outside enclosure has a sign that says "watch out for our mane announcement, something loud is coming"

Gee, I wonder what it could be. Out of all the animals in the zoo and the incredibly subtle hint, I'm guessing it could be anything. ;):p (In all seriousness it'll be interesting to see how they retrofit the enclosure for that species).

I thought the same thing, a family there Sunday told me they think orangutan because they're sometimes referred to as having manes (I've never heard of that but not super familiar with apes) and it was in the master plan (I see chimps in the master plan not orangutan) they're only remaining lion is onyo who is 18 and definitely starting to show his age so I imagine they will be getting at least 1 more lion in sometime in the near future.

The zoo is planning to raise $4.8 million in order to build a new giraffe exhibit. The enclosure will be located in the center of the zoo, cover 2.5-acres and include a 10,000 square foot barn.

As well as the giraffe savanna, the zoo is going to convert the former chimpanzee exhibit into a lion habitat. The link below contains a video as well as almost a dozen images of the giraffe/lion projects:

Looks pretty great. The giraffe barns already under construction so hopefully they can complete fundraising as soon as possible. Looked on the map and it is replacing the kangaroo walkthrough (no great loss ).

They have moved the the kangaroos near the alligator exhibit, they have a new female sloth, 5 new sand cats, the learning center is open again, they are hoping to have the giraffes end of summer or fall, they are also offering bison feed for $20 and a rhino experience for $50 on weekends. And they are hoping for the new lion area to be open and have new cats sometime in 2022. They are going to keep onyo the elderly lion in his same area because they dont want to stress him.
