ZooChat Challenge Global 2022

It's nice to finally take part in this challenge, although I think I would have fared better last year. Still, I'm grateful for the additions of sharks which has salvaged my score so far.

Shedd Aquarium (3/18/22)

1. Bonnethead shark (Sphyrna tiburo)
2. Zebra shark (Stegostoma tigrinum)

10. Leopard Shark (Triakis semifasciata)
11. Swell Shark (Cephaloscyllium ventriosum)
12. Horn Shark (Heterodontus francisci)

That's disappointing! I'd always thought they were on-show and are high on my list of Australian zoo taxa to see should I ever make it over
I can confirm that Healesville Sanctuary doesn't have any Leadbeater's Possums on-show currently. The message received: "No unfortunately the Leadbeater's Possums at Healesville Sanctuary are not on display."

Missed one...

Shepreth - 26/02

42. Tawny Owl (Strix aluco)

Visited my local collection for the first time this year yesterday (Yeah, I know, shame on me! :() and got a nice little total for the challenge. Not groundbreaking, but definitely impressive given the size and scope of the place! :)

Tierpark Berlin is changing his face really fast these days. Many big projects are on the way and the animals shifting their enclousures all the time. I saw the 4 Gnus, opposite the Reedbuck exhibit, where one more baby was born :) Besides a lot of offspring, there are two new exciting inhabitants - Balabac chevrotain and the Guianan bearded saki. I couldn't find the Bush Dogs. Their exhibit is occupied by Maned Wolves now. White-bearded Masked Palm Civet didn't show up either.

Sea Life is not my cup of tea, but combination of Olympiastadion, BMW World and the "Germany's largest variety of Sharks" at Olympiapark spark my interest. They claimed more than 20 spieces, but they are not all on show . Ztl lists Starry smooth-hound and Common smooth-hound, which are not displayed, for example. Nevertheless the diversity of small sharks is quite impressive, indeed.

I might as well join in on this challenge. Starting off (if I miss any and remember, I'll add onto the list):

Potter Park (3/20/22)
1. Amur/Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica)
2. Snow leopard (Panthera uncia)
3. African lion (Panthera leo)

9. African crested porcupine (Hystrix cristata)
10. Giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla)
11. Eurasian eagle owl (Bubo bubo)

Let me know if I made any mistakes, I will omit them as needed.

P.S. not sure if anyone has mentioned it yet, but can I nominate snakes and amphibians as other potential groups? Lots of species are nocturnal, just thought I'd put it out there.

Pretty slow start this year but glad to get off the ground at least.

ZSL London Zoo

1. African wild dog, Lycaon pictus
2. Lion, Panthera leo
3. Cape porcupine, Hystrix africaeaustralis
4. Giant jumping rat, Hypogeomys antimena
5. Linnaeus's two-toed sloth, Choloepus didactylus
6. Moholi bushbaby, Galago moholi
7. Grey slender loris, Loris lydekkerianus
8. Bennett's wallaby, Notamacropus rufogriseus
9. Rodrigues flying fox, Pteropus rodricensis
10. Southern tamandua, Tamandua tetradactyla
11. Tiger, Panthera tigris
12. Pygmy hippopotamus, Choeropsis liberiensis
13. Eurasian tawny owl, Strix aluco
14. Turquoise dwarf gecko, Lygodactylus williamsi
15. Philippine crocodile, Crocodylus mindorensis.

Hopefully can get a few more in London (eagle owl, spectacled owl, barn owl, serval, potto, rakali, armadillo, aye-aye...) but in the meantime I'll probably have to wait for a while to get anything significant, perhaps until the summer.

Visit to Birdworld gets me a small handful of additions in the bird department - disappointing as ZTL listed Ural owls, eagle owls and great greys at the zoo but none of those were signed, plus a tawny owl already seen at London. I do have three additions nevertheless:

16. European long-eared owl, Asio otus
17. Snowy owl, Bubo scandiacus
18. Barn owl, Tyto alba

Still quite a paltry list but one which will increase when I visit Pafos in around two weeks' time.
