Australasian Giraffe Population

The 1.0 calf at Perth Zoo has now been named Akiki. He is still being hand raised by keepers and is progressing well. Information from their social media page.

That’s good news the calf has survived the critical first few weeks.

In one of their history books, Taronga noted the rejection of giraffe calves by their mother’s wasn’t uncommon in their herd and the only side effect was a lack of social awareness by the handraised calves, which was largely tolerated by the adults.

It will be interesting to see if the removal of her calf results in a short interbirth interval between Akiki and Ellie’s second calf.

0.0.1 calf was born at Mogo Wildlife Park yesterday to female Binti joining their growing group. There have been a total of nine (5.3.1) successful giraffe calves in the Australasian region that have been announced by zoos for 2021 with pregnancies confirmed at Darling Downs Zoo as well. I will have to double-check the calf at Australia Zoo to add further information. This is an increase from the seven calves born last year and it seems plausible we could reach double digits by late December.

2021 successful births:
1.0 Azizi (Mzuri x Scarlett) 16-01-2021 at Monarto Safari Park [at Adelaide: handreared]
0.1 Matilda (Mtundu x Tuli) 26-01-2021 at Mogo Wildlife Park
1.0 Kabelo (Uthuli x Manzi) 02-04-2021 at Altina Wildlife Park
0.1 Kamili (Mzuri x Korongo) 07-05-2021 at Monarto Safari Park [handreared]
0.1 Zahara (Armani x Kitoto) 03-09-2021 at Perth Zoo
1.0 Unknown (Forrest x unknown) 00-09-2021 at Australia Zoo
1.0 Akiki (Armani x Ellie) 02-10-2021 at Perth Zoo [handreared]
1.0 Jasiri (Mabuti x Shira) 20-10-2021 at Orana Wildlife Park
0.0.1 Unnamed (Mtundu x Binti) 24-11-2021 at Mogo Wildlife Park

1.0 Azizi at Adelaide Zoo will soon move back to Monarto Safari Park to prevent breeding with the two females at the zoo. He will join the growing bachelor group at the safari park upon his return - reported on their FB page.

Who in their right mind thought "Hunter" was a suitable name for a gentle plant eating animal?....

It’s even worse when you consider Hunter is the name of one of their Sumatran tigers, who’s one of the most high profile animals in the zoo.

This is next level recycling. :p

1.0 Tambo and 0.1 Kinky have both died at Monarto Safari Park this week. They both leave behind several offspring - reported on social media.

Unfortunate news.

Tambo was quite a successful breeding male, siring many many offspring during his tenure at Monarto. He was born at Melbourne back in 2000 to their pair, Makulu and Twiga, and lived to an impressive age of 22!

Kinky too did her share in the regional breeding program, siring multiple offspring over the years. She was one of the first calves born at Monarto back in 1999.

Quick question are all Australasian giraffes hybrids?
The majority of giraffes currently in the region are inbred hybrids. Unlike North America’s “Rothiculated” population, Australasia have an even greater mix of giraffe species/subspecies including Masai and Cape founders. There are still a few Rothschild’s floating around but they have been accumulated into the main population.

If we’re to believe the Rothschild’s in the region are purebred (I’ve been told they’re not), we have 3.1 in New Zealand:

1.0 Flynn (Harold x Nathalie) 01-09-2004 at Orana Wildlife Park
1.0 Orly (Harold x Zuri) 09-11-2004 at Orana Wildlife Park
1.0 Kijana (Harold x Zuri) 30-10-2006 at Orana Wildlife Park
0.1 Harriet (Harold x Tunu) 26-11-2012 at Orana Wildlife Park

And a handful in Australia. Any offspring sired by Harold are Rothschild’s and so are the offspring of Mukulu and Twiga. One of Harold’s sons was bred to the daughter of Mukuku and Twiga at Mogo.

By my understanding, these are the Rothschild's giraffes (from the Orana/NZ lines) still living in Australia (3.7 in total):

1.0 Shaba (Ijumma x Shani) 21-08-2011 at Mogo Wildlife Park (now at National Zoo)
1.0 Armani (Harold x Zuri) 23-12-2002 at Orana Wildlife Park (now at Perth Zoo)
1.0 Ajali (Armani x Misha) 29-05-2010 at Perth Zoo (now at Werribee Open Range Zoo)
0.1 Manzi (Ijumma x Shani) 24-01-2010 at Mogo Wildlife Park (now at Altina Wildlife Park)
0.1 Penny (Armani x Misha) 24-12-2007 at Perth Zoo (now at Australia Zoo)
0.1 Tanzi (Mukulu x Twiga) 22-08-2002 at Melbourne Zoo
0.1 Shani (Mukulu x Twiga) 21-03-2006 at Melbourne Zoo
0.1 Binti (Ijumma x Shani) 24-01-2013 at Mogo Wildlife Park
0.1 Tuli (Ijumma x Shani) 00-00-2014 at Mogo Wildlife Park
0.1 Oni (Ijumma x Shani) 27-01-2016 at Mogo Wildlife Park

As far as I'm aware, the pairing you're referring to is that of Ijumma x Shani at Mogo (producing 1.4 calves), but with Ijumma's passing, the latest calves at Mogo are hybrids/generics.

(My initial knowledge of the Rothschild's lines is indebted to @jay and the ozzoos website in the early 2000s, but any errors in extrapolations of the bloodlines since 2005ish are all mine)
