ZooChat Challenge Global 2022

Totally forgot that geckos count for the challenge so here's another from Hoo -

63. Tokay Gecko (Gekko gecko)
Oh yeah, saw two new (for the year) owl species that I was convinced were already on my list but aren't...

Hoo Zoo (28/06) -

64. Snowy Owl (Bubo scandiacus)
65. Eurasian Eagle-owl (Bubo bubo)

That is definitely my final total for Hoo! ;)

We need to shape up now !
I think you're safe, losing 3 months of zoo-visiting (One [repeat] trip to Sea Life doesn't count!) has definitely put me on the back foot.

Hoo Zoo (28/06) -

64. Brown Wood Owl (Strix leptogrammica)
65. Snowy Owl (Bubo scandiacus)
66. Eurasian Eagle-owl (Bubo bubo)
67. African Spotted Eagle-owl (Bubo africanus)

Also saw a hybrid of the latter two, not counting it but mentioning it for completeness sake. And that is definitely my final total for Hoo! ;)

I do not think that exotic Owls do count for this challenge.

There is still a lot of time. Last year the game started very late, for example. Good to have you around, tho :)

A visit to Berkenhof's Tropical Zoo - the Netherlands gave me just 1 single new species for the Challenge :

- 49 - Lesser hedgehog tenrec - Echinops telfairi

Just discovered that the New Zealand-parrots count also for this challenge so I can add a species which I had already seen at 2 parks this year :

- 50 - Kea - Nestor notabilis

A revisit to Rotterdam Zoo ( together with @Rayane ) gave me 2 new species which I missed the last time. For one of them - the Pallas's cat ( which I also already missed at Zie-Zoo ) we had to return at least 4 times to the enclosure but shortly before closing time - on our last attemp - one animal suddenly appeared and showed itself VERY well and even poo-ed in front of us !

- 51 - Swamp wallaby - Wallabia bicolor
- 52 - Pallas's cat - Otocolobus manul

Later on in the same month I visited the Gambian Reptiles Farm and this gave me one new species for the Challenge :
- 53 - West African crocodile - Crocodylus suchus

Marwell Zoo 01/07/22

Great day at Marwell with lots of new species for me and many animals out and about. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a particularly successful trip for this challenge as Marwell doesn’t have very many eligible species and some of the ones that do count I have either a) already counted for this challenge - parma and red-necked wallabies, tiger, Linnaeus’ sloth, binturong - b) were no shows - clouded leopards, potoroos - or c) both - serval. Perhaps my biggest disappointment was that the Javan chevrotain has been removed from the tropical house due to bird flu and not yet reintroduced :(

so:

42. Snow Leopard (panthera uncia)

Gotta admit, despite lots of species being active and about, there were a lot of no shows too (particularly in the ‘life among the trees’ section - scimitar-horned oryx, lowland anoa, clouded leopards, servals, potoroos, swift parrots, sakis, golden lion tamarins, golden headed lion tamarins, titis, pygmy marmosets, red-handed tamarins, Bokiboky.

What was the scenario in which you were showed this animal? Is it on-exhibit and part of an education talk or was the animal taken out specifically for you to view because you have a connection to the farm? Entries made under the latter are not admissible in the challenge.

The ( very young ) animal is kept on public display but a keeper walks around with the very few visitors which were able to find the place and takes out the animals ( mostly snakes ) and shows them to the visitors to have a closer look. The croc would however also be visuable if it wasn't taken out of the enclosure :).

No striped possums in Port Douglas anymore, alas.
If so, that must be a very recent change. They made a Facebook post for World Wildlife Day this year (which was 3 March) saying that they have them in their nocturnal house.
