Seneca Park Zoo Seneca Park Zoo News

rumor has it siamang are in the plan with orangutans. The Madagascar section will have more than one lemur yard, so hopefully plenty of space for different species. I’ve heard the new expansion will also have a large shark aquarium and possibly Komodo dragons. But as mentioned elsewhere things are still being designed.
...Groovy! I'm excited to see what this entails come 2023-2024!

Is it primarily a primate building being made (plus sharks and dragons), or will this Rainforest addition also include new birds, reptiles, etc.? It'd be a shame it the addition only includes rather common in zoo species, and I'd really like seeing some smaller or rarer animals be incorporated.

Siamangs would be a great addition, particularly since gorillas seem to be nixed from this plan (which I think is a good idea, too little space). More than one lemur species doesn't surprise me, another great idea. Komodo dragons would be cool, but I get the feeling they would only be able to hold one, which is fine if they can build a nice exhibit. I find sharks questionable. This is still supposed to be a rainforest exhibit, right? Unless they want to and are somehow able to get their hands on bull shark (observed in the Amazon), I don't see the point of turning this misc. animal building-turned tropics building back into a misc. house.

I believe it was always just a tropical building, with coral reef tanks being suggested in the master plan. So holding species from the tropics region, both terrestrial and aquatic would fit. I’d expect some more common smaller shark species in a coral reef tank tbh.

An update on the proposed $121 million expansion. Species now mentioned include Clouded Leopard, Binturong, Island Flying Fox, Komodo Dragon and Chinese Alligator along with the lemurs, orangutans and the 220,000-gallon aquarium: Bello proposes $121 million expansion of the Seneca Park Zoo

Not to sound skeptical but sounds like an overinflated campaign promise. I mean yes construction prices are up, but the zoo does not even have the room for that large an expansion in the current site. As well I doubt they’ll be able to fund it. But we’ll see…That price is nearly 4 times the original projection.

I would be very surprised if all of these species are included. The concept plans in the article make this project much larger then the space that’s available. This is the same site where they originally wanted both orangutans and gorillas before then wisely sticking to orangs. The new proposed species all sound like great additions for this new SE Asian/Pacific Islands theme, but I just can’t see all of them fitting in.

Google maps is showing over 3 acres -ish (not super accurate I know. But I also see the zoo owns the rail road space between the Zoo and houses to the east.(X-on hunt app). I heard from docents at the zoo that the expansion includes widening the footprint from the old main zoo building. And will come all the way north to the open dining pavilion. The old snack bar is being torn down.

I think cloudies and binturongs would be fantastic for SPZ, but I will accept people's critique of space fair. If they actually are going for a Southeast Asia theme, then why exhibit Chinese alligators if not because they are commonly kept? Tomistomas, Siamese crocodile, or even a saltie if they can get their hands on one would be more fitting. I still am not fond of the idea of an aquarium in this building (it would mean more space for the leopards and binturongs). That said, if the final product appears to do right by whatever they bring in and they find a coherent way to tie it to the tropics, then I'll take my words with mustard on top if you know what I mean.

A new article has been posted about the new tropical complex. It sounds like the list of species in the complex is being finalized as they’ve already figured out all the mammals that they want for the complex. It also details how the construction will affect animals already at the zoo and measures implemented for that, and further confirmed the new aquarium too.

I really hope they can pull this off! I think it will be amazing!

I was at the zoo today, and was told the lynx kittens are doing well. One male and one female. The parents are Bianca and Gretzky. The staff have closed the children's play tunnels that go into the exhibit to give mom and kittens some peace and quiet.
There was a Zoo Brew scheduled for tonight, so I didn’t stick around. :)
