ZooChat Challenge Global 2022

287. Sand tiger shark/ Carcharias taurus
* Angular roughshark/ Oxynotus centrina
@ThylacineAlive , @ZooBinh , what about Squaliformes ? They are probably not a lot of spieces in captivity ?
Personally, if I recall correctly, we did agree to include sharks as a whole without a mention of which taxons of sharks count, so I would allow this addition. However, if I’m forgetting a detail or if there’s a valid reason not to include Squaliformes, I would wait for @ThylacineAlive ’s confirmation as well :).

Nice visit to Hamerton today - a ton of additions but still not nearly as many as I could have - possums as ever elusive, as were cuscuses, jackal, etc. Did see the lynx though...

36. Canadian lynx, Lynx canadensis
37. Common wombat, Vombatus ursinus
38. Corsac fox, Vulpes corsac

50. Tayra, Eira barbara
51. Masked palm civet, Paguma larvata
52. White-nosed coati, Nasua narica

Still, 18 additions (out of a possible 33...) but still a nice visit. Posting pics later. I might be able to rescue my pretty paltry score over the summer depending on whether or not I actually make it to the places planned.

From a visit to London Zoo today:

53. Potto, Perodictus potto

Think that's more or less the last I'll be getting for a while unless I get out of the country...

What days to visit zoos - in the middle of a heatwave. Anyway....

Just discovered that the New Zealand-parrots count also for this challenge so I can add a species which I had already seen at 2 parks this year :

- 50 - Kea - Nestor notabilis

A revisit to Rotterdam Zoo ( together with @Rayane ) gave me 2 new species which I missed the last time. For one of them - the Pallas's cat ( which I also already missed at Zie-Zoo ) we had to return at least 4 times to the enclosure but shortly before closing time - on our last attemp - one animal suddenly appeared and showed itself VERY well and even poo-ed in front of us !

- 51 - Swamp wallaby - Wallabia bicolor
- 52 - Pallas's cat - Otocolobus manul

Later on in the same month I visited the Gambian Reptiles Farm and this gave me one new species for the Challenge :
- 53 - West African crocodile - Crocodylus suchus

Yesterday I visited Faunapark Flakkee - the Netherlands and can add again some new species to my year-list :
- 54 - Eurasian harvest mouse - Micromys minutus
- 55 - Ocelot - Leopardus pardalis
- 56 - Bobcat - Lynx rufus
- 57 - Cape genet - Genetta tigrina
- 58 - Caracal - Caracal caracal
- 59 - Jungle cat - Felis chaus
- 60 - Raccoon dog - Nyctereutes procyonoides

Your red fox does not count, as that is a domesticated form of red fox. :)

54. African Crested Porcupine Hystrix africaeaustralis
55. African Pygmy Hedgehog Atelerix albiventris

I just did some final edits to the sheets to squash out repeats. What is on the list is what is most accurate, and that does mean people's counts were tampered with to take out repeats, so I'll let those participants know so that there's no surprise:

@birdsandbats you included Hippopotamus twice.
@Brum you included African Crested Porcupine twice.
@twilighter you included Mongolian Gerbil twice.

That should be it!

Apparently this wallaby (#36) was actually a Swamp Wallaby. This does not currently affect my totals.

@ThylacineAlive , @ZooBinh , what about Squaliformes ? They are probably not a lot of spieces in captivity ?

There is second exhibit with Ring-tailed possum at Hamerton now and I saw fur few times there, but not the whole animal. I need to try again... ARK Wildlife Park on the other side, safe the day and gave us whole 3 spieces of Genets.

If Port Lympne still has the Owston's Civet, is not on display.

I seem to be asking this question a lot but out of interest, if it was by public transport, how did you reach ARK wildlife park? I've had a few looks in the past but I've never found an easy route there...

Interesting news about Hamerton - would you say it is easier to see the possums now or are they still as secretive?

You can always ask :) I didn't use public transport, but the @pipaluk's help. He was also very kind to show me Howletts and Port Lympne today.

The chances for the Possum are theoretically double, but practically the same. You need tons of luck, I believe.

So you guys did Hamerton and ARK in a day? Not gonna lie, that's way beyond impressive!:D

Also good to know the Rusty-spotted Genet is still there as I couldn't find it on ZTL. :)

I think someone put rusty spotted cat on ZTL instead by mistake! Don't think they've ever had the cats, definitely the genets
ZTL is rubbish for this collection, none of the rodents I'd hoped for were there!

A bit late to join but I've only visited my first zoo in June. My first entirely zoo-focused trip to Western Germany (and one zoo in the Netherlands) was a blast, here's what I've seen in the zoos I visited that counts for the challenge (please do correct me if I've counted something that shouldn't count though).
