I agree, to me it feels like they’re saying it’s a ‘prison.’ Why would you even go to a zoo if your perspective was that limited?

I get they might not mean anything by it but it seems like a backhanded comment.

I've always used "cage" interchangeably with "enclosure", I don't really think anything of it even when the enclosure isn't particularly cage-like.

A few I heard at the zoo today:

-Prairie dogs are baby badgers
-Bison are moose
-Duikers are pudu (shoutout to that person for knowing what a pudu is, though!)

I’ve similarly heard people referring to upcoming keeper talks as shows - as in the elephant show, the lion show etc.

The zoo in question also had a Galapagos giant tortoise keeper talk, so I’m curious as to what tricks they were expecting to see them perform.

Shoutout to them for knowing what duikers are as well. Haven’t met one zoo visitor who knows what a duiker is.

They didn’t know what a duiker is, hence why they called it a pudu.

Was at the Greensboro Science Center today. As I was at Pygmy Hippo, a family stops behind me looking out at the other of the boardwalk and staring at the small pond back there. A girl (at least 13 yrs. old) tells her brother, "That's where they capture all the fish for the aquarium." And then the family walks away. I just stood there confused trying to figure out the reason for this statement.

That's what I thought at first, but she said it in such a dull and bored voice that had no hint of sarcasm or anything sounding like a joke. That and the fact that she said it multiple times and no one said anything other than "cool".

Yup!! The GSC also has an okapi, cassowaries, tigers, maned wolves, fishing cats, Javan gibbons, binturongs, sandbar sharks, African penguins, Asian small-clawed otters, and so much more!!!

Calling Pygmy Hippos 'baby hippos' is one that does it for me.

I've also heard Orangutans being called chimps multiple times....I've never heard of an orange chimp!

A lady at kolmården said that the zoo was lazy since they had "horses" and "long-haired cows" and not real wild animals in the central asian enclosure.She was reffering to wild yaks and kulans.

To be somewhat fair, those yaks would've almost certainly been domestic yaks..
