Berlin Tierpark Tierpark Berlin news 2022

Both at the elephant building and at the Savannah area they started moving and piling up soil. They also removed a lot of the old concrete around the ditches and even started implementing new concrete elements for the future ditches. And the whole elephant building disappears behind scaffolds. Here you can see some pictures by the German user W. Dreier: http://www.schueling.com/forum/fotos/gross/134657.jpg

And, if you register at Zoofreunde Forum, you can find even many more interesting pictures here (I hope this thread will be updated):

W. Dreier posted some more updates on the Africa zone. It really looks like they picked up some speed:

Some news from the park:

New efforts to protect wild habitats
Berlin Tierpark and Zoo started a new initiative called "Berlin World Wild". This is actually also part of the reason why they raised ticket prices - to raise funds for in situ projects. They also signed another Memorandum of Understanding with the WWF to expand the support for reintroducing European Bisons into the wild. They will build new infrastructure at the enclosure in the Tierpark, so each year they can host up to 10 European Bisons from different zoos for a while before finally sending them off to a park in Azerbaijan.

Also, they had some offspring in recent days:

And this unusual "friendship" also has been a topic of interest:

Apparently, the couple of Malayan tigers have left Tierpark Berlin for Planète Sauvage in France where they join two other individuals. This move was motivated by the fact that their Sumatran tigers are now in breeding situation and additional space is needed.

If this is true, it is very recent, a Malayan tiger was still present in the exhibit last Saturday. Sumatran tigers were together.
The motivation also comes from the EAZA which recommends to completely stop the Malaysian tigers for the member parks, for the benefit of the Sumatran and Amur tigers...

I was so damn unfortunate to visit the day they moved in the new sun bears (by unfortunate, I mean that I only got to see the reptile exhibits in the left-hand side of the Alfred Brehm house before all guests were ushered out and the house closed for the day at only 2 PM), so I can also confirm that they do indeed keep them.

@markmeier

I am missing all of your great updates for the tierpark!

Well, actually I have been rather busy and when I finally got some holidays it just seemed so much that I hardly knew where to start. :D But as it won't get any easier this way and you already pointed me out, I guess I'll just start with the latest updates from the main building sites. As I have asked the German Schueling Forum user W. Dreier for permission in the past, I'll just try to enter some of his pictures directly.

1) Savannah exhibit:

They created a new ditch/trench and coated it with artificial rocks

Here you can see some of the new structuring:

The stable buildings have been hidden behind wood (a bit similar to the gerenuk enclosure but even more dense)

And this later picture already shows a bit better what we can expect in the end

2. Elephant Exhibit

The ditch is quite similar to that of the savannah. But I'm not quite sure what this is supposed to be for/become. Perhaps they'll add metal posts with steel cables - like with the rhino pagoda at the zoo. But this construction seems a bit too massive for that (or did they secretly clone some mammoth...?

I'm also not sure what this will be for: Contact zone? Feeding opportunity for visitors?

And will this be for smaller animals or rather for elephant enrichment? I would assume the latter.

The old concrete walls will receive a thin new coating (as a first impression, I actually like this much better than the planned fake rock formation - and it will be much cheaper which probably is why they chose this option)

As you can see, there has been quite a lot of progress. I think they'll be able to present the Savannah by next season (Spring or Summer 2023).

However, they had some problems to get material for the new roof of the elephant building. So this may be delayed until 2024 (and it probably will get even more expensive than planned).

3. Asia enclosure
Due to overall rising costs, they also delayed working on this smaller project until after summer when some prices are predicted to drop. So I'm not sure, when this will open. But it could still be in 2023 as it isn't such a big area like the Himalaya or Africa zones.

4. Minor developments 1 - "new" mixed species exhibits:

They added two interesting new species to the large vulture aviary next to the Brehm building - Gray-crowned Cranes and one Secretarybird (they still have the other one in the flight show - the couple didn't get along any more - and also got a new pair for the former aviary):

Another bird exhibit shows a new species...

...alongside one which has been in the park a bit longer (but they also just moved to the "new" exhibit which used to display parrots)

And apparently, they also like to introduce primates and tortoises to each other:

This one has been around a bit longer (the animals get less excited now):
