I made a visit to the Waikanae Estuary this morning on the way to my sister's place. For the last month or so there has been a couple of Common Terns and a Little Tern at the White-fronted Tern roost there. I had hoped to see them on my January First Big Day but I couldn't find them in the time I had. Today one of the Common Terns was fortunately positioned near the water's edge with just a few White-fronted Terns, instead of being amongst the thousand-ish other terns in the main roost where it would have been as good as invisible for me, so I got a very clear view of it. The Little Tern took a bit longer but eventually I found it at one end of the main flock. An Australasian Gannet offshore was a nice bonus.

Made another (probably final) go at that warbler spot in south CT. Still no Tennessee Warbler which has been seen consistently, but I did get a couple other species. I also swung by a nearby site I'd heard about that was good for sparrows. To my surprise, the site turned out to literally be a single row of bushes planted at the corner of an amazon warehouse!

I visited Hammonasset Beach State Park for the first time this year yesterday. I missed a number of species which I thought would be shoe-ins, including the vagrant Townsend's Solitaire which is still present and reported to ebird almost daily. One of those generally easy species I coincidentally picked up driving on the highway earlier today.

Yesterday 21th January I was walking at night with my boyfriend by the river side. A big grey heron appeared flying from not very far distance so despite the low light I was able to see it very well.

Today, despite being a freezing day, I saw a new species for the year when coming to work place. A flock of three delightfully colorful goldfinches taking off from the grass, scared by my presence.

I'm not adding any local observations till after I get back from Uganda, however I thought I would mention this one as it is very current. A young southern elephant seal has been hanging around Port Phillip Bay over the last week. Earlier it was at Portarlington where it made a bit of a mess, breaking windows and invading a petrol station. It is currently next to Cameron's Bight Jetty at Blairgowrie on the Mornington Peninsula, where I saw it this morning. The jetty makes a great viewing platform.
