Zoo København Copenhagen Zoo news 2023

On Instagram I read that a male amur leopard has been transferred to Japan. Does someone know which animal left Kopenhagen and which individuals still liver in that Zoo?

According to the zoo's instagram, the male that left was the last young of the former breeding couple. The former breeding female has also recently left the zoo and a new female will soon arrive.

The male leaving next summer was born in Copenhagen in 2022. He will move to Asahiyama Zoo in Japan.

The previous breeding female should be Zyra. She was born in Bellewaerde Park in 2016. She recently moved to EcoZonia in France. The new breeding female is Manju. She was born in Leipzig in 2021. She came to Copenhagen earlier this year.

Not much can be found about the breeding male in Copenhagen.

Copenhagen's run-down and fairly boring night zoo has gotten a makeover thanks to a donation. The original three species (Moholi bushbabies, southern three-banded armadillos, and Egyptian fruit bats) are still around, but they've also added four new species: Short-beaked echidna, tawny frogmouth, sugar glider, and an unspecified species of bettong/potoroo (I'm not enough of an expert to try to guess from the video):

The latter species is going to live in a new walkthrough area, though it's not mentioned if the other three additions are free-ranging or in exhibits.

This year already 4 Keas (Nestor notabilis) hatched.

Great news for the Tasmanian devil (Sarcophilus harrisii) population in Europe, Copenhagen zoo has imported 21 Tasmanian devils from breeding centres in Australia and Tasmania. 9 of them will stay in Copenhagen the rest will move to zoos in France, Belgium and Germany to create new breeding couples/groups.

Copenhagen Zoo's joint project to reintroduce the European stag beetle (Lucanus cervus) to Denmark has been a success. Surveys done at sites where the species was released a decade ago has found adult beetles, indicating that they have bred for at least two generations. The species had been extinct in Denmark since the 1970s.

While the stag beetle release involved larvae and adult beetles collected from Sweden, Germany and Poland, Copenhagen do have captive-breeding programmes for another three threatened species of saproxylic (deadwood) beetles:
  • Noble chafer (Gnorimus nobilis) - bred since 2016, with 4,500 larvae released into the wild
  • Variable chafer (Gnorimus variabilis) - bred since 2022, with reintroductions now starting
  • Hermit beetle (Osmoderma eremita) - collected in 2023, with breeding yet to occur - the hope is that there will be sufficient larvae to begin reintroductions in 2024

For how many Okapis is that okapi building meant?
At what place at the zoo will that building be realized?

Hello
the new okapi facility is an extension of the old facility, where 3 okapis will go. 1 female and 2 males.

Another question is what is happening with the brunbjörns facility, saw that they have started to rebuild it, does anyone know?
