Rare Animals in US AZA Facilities

Ok, well if it makes it easier, we can just do US Zoos, but let’s try to not include the really bad roadside zoos.
Your thread - it is up to you :)

Some people don't want to include places outside of the AZA as they may be difficult to get to, have limited hours, be financially unstable, and people's perception of what a "bad" zoo is can vary.

The thread OP said "AZA facilities", so I eliminated the very small non-AZA places and rescues with the exception of CMA. But it is nice to know that other places outside the AZA are holding things. Personally I think limiting any list to just AZA zoos is to narrow. Rescues are their own thing, but non-AZA and AZA should be included when discussing a rare creature separate from a facility.

Yeah, those things are all over the place, especially (again) outside AZA zoos.

Alaska SeaLife is AZA, Pittsburgh isn't ;)

Which and how many US zoos hold Malayan tiger?
I have only saw them at Zoo Negara KL, Zoo Melaka and Lok Kawi Zoo on Malaysian Borneo, they awe-inspire a lot"". And Taman Tumbina Zoo (free entry) in Bintulu had tiger enclosure but it was empty.
And I will be happy a lot if there are more of them in European zoos with a breeding programm in place, at expense of hybrid and Amur tigers.

Right, but Pittsburgh isn't a small non-AZA either (which is what I said).

Regardless, you are right, Alaska Sealife should have been included in the elephant seal list :)

The thing is if we only discuss rare species from an AZA perspective, than a lot of very common North American zoo animals then become rare.

Guam Rail, Micronesian Kingfisher

Rail has more than ten holders, all AZA.
Kingfisher has more than a dozen holders, all AZA.

Harpy Eagle,

At least 7 holders within the AZA, plus a couple outside too.

and if their new expansion keeps its promise will have African Leopards in the coming months.

Yeah it almost certainly won't be African Leopards.

Red wolves definitely are more common on the east coast, but can be a more rare sighting for the west coast. Fresno Chaffee Zoo however does have a 1.1 pair (Cypress & Daisy) that they just welcomed recently.

One of the biggest holders and breeders is on the West Coast though - Point Defiance. I've seen them both there and at Fresno.

Arabian oryx which can be found at San Diego Zoo Safari Park are a rare sight in AZA collections. The same goes for the Egyptian vulture.

Arabian Oryx are relatively rare in the AZA these days, though there's quite a few non-AZA with them now.
The vulture is indeed rare, with 2 AZA holders and one non.

Speaking of gibbons:
Pileated: GCC, Wildlife World, Gladys Porter
Hoolock: GCC

Don't know the numbers off hand but Agile and Muellers aren't held in many places

Anyways, as far as AZA species not yet mentioned that are rare - *stretches fingers*

What non-AZA zoo has three-toed sloths? I thought DWA was the only place outside their natural range that keeps them?
Also, Wildlife World Zoo is a non-AZA with Onager.

Is there no Giant/Goliath Hummingbirds still around?

Haven't heard of any in a long time, last I was aware we didn't even have any exotic hummers for several years until SDZ recently got their Amazilia. That said, it would not necessarily surprise me to learn DWA happens to have some kicking around bts somewhere. I know they had a small variety for awhile.

DWA did have Giant Hummingbird a few years ago, at least. There's a place in south Florida with several exotic hummingbird species, I know.

I saw the ones at DWA (bts) and Miami Metro but hadn't heard of or saw any in at least 8 years and figured they had gone away for the most part. Quite an impressive species.

Talapoins....from a colleague of mine they are still at Audubon but no longer at Little Rock?
