The zoo appears to have started construction on the new cape vulture aviary in the former Nubian ibex exhibit which has been empty for over 5 years. The bad news is when I was there today more pathways are closed as a result. They closed off the walkways at the end of the bachelor gorilla exhibit, at the bridge by the orangutan exhibit that crossed over and allowed viewing into the mountain bongo/yellow-backed duiker exhibit on the way to the gerenuk exhibit and the pathway down the hill from the old lion exhibit (which makes the Von der Decken hornbills, black duikers and Lady Ross's turacos plus the gerenuks impossible to see). The mountain bongo/yellow-backed duiker exhibit is only visible from a small area near the orangutan exhibit.

I noticed some new things during my visit today.

The kookaburra exhibit in front of the Australia House has been changed to a brush-tailed bettong exhibit. The animal sign is up, however, there was a sign that it was off exhibit.

I spotted an unsigned female babirusa in the former lowland anoa exhibit adjacent to the signed babirusa exhibit.

Some type of construction has commenced in the former hippopotamus exhibit, apparently for another type of large mammal per a volunteer I asked.

Are they just constructing at the hippo exhibit. I’ve kinda always thought that exhibit was so small for a large mammal like that in my opinion.

It looked like right now there's only construction going on at the former hippo exhibit in that part of the zoo, perhaps it's just an interim improvement until more work is done under the Master Plan. There is also construction going on at the former Nubian ibex exhibit for the new cape vulture exhibit. They have not yet begun any repairs on the bridge in front of the langur house.

Cheyenne is getting a new mountain tapir?!?!?!?!
This is very surprising news! While I really want to visit the Los Angeles Zoo someday, I'm hoping to visit Cheyenne this year!

Nice to see Brookfield supplying a Chinese giant salamander as well :)

How many mountain tapirs are there at LA?

They have 4 - 1 female (Inca) and 3 males (Mochi, Sergio and Mojito). The male, Mochi, who had been in the exhibit between the markhors and the former hippo exhibit was moved to the South America exhibit area due to the demolition/construction in the former hippo exhibit per my conversation with a keeper I saw in the South America exhibit over the weekend. At that time Inca was in the exhibit and I was told she was alternating with Mochi in that space.

Thank you, I'm planning a California trip for next year and want to ensure I see one...

Some observations from my visit today:

The walk-through aviaries have reopened.

The bat-eared fox exhibit in the roundhouse with the Ruppell's sand fox and fossa is now occupied by yellow-footed rock wallabies. I didn't see any in the exhibit, but the sign is up for them and the bat-eared fox sign has been removed. Yellow-footed rock wallabies are also on exhibit in Australia.

The roundhouse with the Steller's sea eagles has been closed off to visitors. Per the sign, they're nesting and the zoo is giving them extra space and quiet. They can still be viewed from behind the chain.
