I was at the zoo whilst on holiday today and I have to say it's looking so much better (was starting to look tired when I last visited) All the animals were on good form in the sunshine, but also lots of new fences, new signs, lots of new species and better information about conservation. Met some of the keepers doing the new keeper talks and they were saying there has been lots of changes recently but they are loving it. I could see what I thought was the new gorilla house but one of the kitchen staff told me it's for pigs. Looks amazing and huge. So nice to see jersey zoo being loved again

Oh and also visited the new Aldabra tortoise house next to the butterflies. It's AMAZING!!!. the zoo have truly outdone themselves. An amazing and huge exhibit and you can get really close to the tortoises. Feels like your sneaking through their home. Well done jersey zoo. Back on form as the top zoo in the UK

I'm planning on making my first visit to Jersey zoo in the next couple of months and I was wondering if anyone had any tips or suggestions on how to make the most of my trip. I've wanted to go there for a while now and I really hope it lives up to my expectations. Also as somewhat of an amateur photographer, I'd appreciate any tips or advice for getting some good shots. Thanks in advance :)

I really hope the population grows and we can see them in more zoos in the UK again.

Oh, the population at Jersey is fairly sizeable at around 80 individuals - the issue is that they have historically been rather reluctant to let any of them out, I believe!

Which is one reason why it was such a massive surprise (but a welcome one, to be sure) that Northumberland Zoo not only received the surplus males from Bristol once it closed and much of their stock returned to Jersey, but that the latter collection subsequently sent some females up north to make pairs again.

I had a call from Durrell today, (because I'm a lifer)
Gelada mentioned upthread are now on show, and I was surprised to learn the troupe numbers 15 individuals.
The new indoor Gorilla house is making slow progress as they are building around the existing facility, and not likely to be complete until spring 2024.
Incidentally it was confirmed that Lee Durrell does indeed reside permanently in Corfu. She returns to Jersey a few times a year to manage things that cannot be done remotely.

After several months of closure, the walkthrough Kirindy Forest aviary has reopened after work has been completed to refresh its structure. It currently has Hamerkop, Madagascar Ibis, Red Fody, Namaqua Dove and Meller's Duck with plans to add more birds to fill the space further over the next couple of weeks - reported on their FB page.

It looks amazing, cant wait to get over to see it. So nice to see things happening at the zoo again. Stagnated for too long

Does anyone know what time the Aye-Ayes are most active in the Kirindy Forest exhibit, as I remember there being a partially outdoor section to that enclosure where you might get a better chance of seeing them in the daylight. Thanks

I would probably be considered a zoo regular, based on my experience and because they are nocturnal I would say its highly unlikely you see them in that Kirindy enclosure with the outdoor section during the daylight.
Your best bet would be to either visit in the late autumn or winter when days are getting short and leave that enclosure till last just before closing time or sign up to one of the Durrell at Dusk events (that are restarting again as covid restrictions lesson) if you want really want to see them using that space.

I was familiar with Gerald Durrell from a young age, and always had a soft spot for Jersey Zoo, although I had never been there...
Seeing what direction it seems to be going in is quite disheartening.

And what direction is that??. Doing more conservation work than ever before. Raising more funds for wildlife than ever before . Moving with the times.

Having followed Jersey Zoo’s progress over many years, first visited 1978, attended their courses and volunteered there over a period of years, you’re not convincing me:(
