Berlin Tierpark Tierpark Berlin news 2023

According to Zootierliste, Berlin Tierpark received 1.1 specimen of the critically endangered Bavarian Pine Moles from Insbruck in January. So far, Innsbruck and Berlin Tierpark are also the only two keepers registered there.

Let's see whether the two animals will actually be shown or, like the field hamsters, only be kept for (conservation) breeding.
Sorry, Markmeier. The animals are Bavarian pine voles.

Hah, I even looked it up only now, actually wondered what "pine vole" even means (the German trivial name "Kurzohrmaus" means "mouse with short ears"). And then somehow I still typed "moles". :D

So thanks for the very quick correction. I could even still edit the original post.

Breeding success with short-beaked echidnas
Berlin Tierpark celebrates the hatching of a short-beaked echidna. It is only the third breeding success with this species in German zoo history - even though the first captive breeding actually happened right here in Berlin (zoo) some 115 years ago...

Some fresh news:

Berlin Tierpark has some Nankeen Night Herons again. Zootierliste does not list them yet (the only listing on there is Singapore River Safari), but they have been spotted and even photographed by a frequent visitor and Tierpark insider:

Also, the collared brown lemurs have some offspring:

Last but not least, zoo director Knieriem stated that Savannah and Asia Exhibit are to open "soon" and confirmed they are currently planning for lions, rhinos and additional African ungulates.

Hopefully sooner than we think!:)

The last somewhat specific thing I heard was "Spring 2023". I guess, this could still be considered "soon". Unfortunately, they could not complete everything for the beginning of the season. But I guess, they mainly play the dinosaur card now anyways. They may even like the idea of opening the Africa complex and an otter exhibit, once the run on the dinos starts to slow down a bit.

Did the night herond ever leave? The Tierpark keeps the manillensis subspecies and they are listed as such continually on zootierliste.

Any idea on the rhino species? Also if you don't mind me asking as I haven't been following the news as much as I'd like, where exactly will the Savannah and Asian exhibits respectively be? Apologies for all the questions :P.

Savannah exhibits where the zebra/ostrich paddocks were combined with the giraffe exhibit. Asian exhibit beside the Patagonia restaurant.

Apparently, these are just Nycticorax caledonicus not Nycticorax caledonicus manillensis:
www.Zootierliste.de vs. www.Zootierliste.de

That *could* be an error made by whoever added the listing to ZTL, mind you - there's been plenty of cases of people trying to add/edit a taxon and jumping to conclusions when they can't find an existing entry.

I'm really not sure to be honest. However, the writer on Schuelingforum appears to not only know both groups of herons or their respective exhibit signs in the Tierpark but also the herons in Singapore (he even took the picture of the speciman from Singapore). For as much as I unverstand, he doesn't believe they are the same herons but he also got a bit confused and tries to find out more about the new(?) birds.

Something else: There now are Oriental Garden Lizards (Calotes versicolor) in the Brehm building. They have been kept by the Tierpark in the past, but there aren't many current listings on Zootierliste (only one small German institution and one each in six other countries).

Ok, let's give some updates:

- The herons actually were indeed the same ones like before which just got moved. Sorry for any confusion. Their old enclosure now houses Madagascar Ibises which seem to be new to the Tierpark (they had some in the zoo, though): see here

- The aviary inside the tropical hall of the Brehm building now features parrots: Moluccan eclectus. The Malay Eagle owl now lives somewhere else and the Bear cuscus also never returned there.

- New inside the Brehm building are also Ortiental Garden Lizards (Calotes versicolor)

- @AthleticBinturong asked about the former snow leopard exhibit. It's still empty but they started giving it a fresh look with a lot of vertical branches: see here

- The 4 new spotted hyenas are all males:

- The Collared Brown Lemurs have some new offspring:

- The Tierpark started moving animals to the new Savannah zone. Wildebeests and zebras are not in their preliminary enclosures any longer and Grévy's Zebras have been spotted in the new area just as were Ostriches which thus returned to the Tierpark.

- The Lowland Anoas moved on to Berlin Zoo. They just made a short stop at the Tierpark.
