So yesterday I went to the zoo. Inside the insect house, from the naked mole rats on, there is construction. I was wondering if anyone knew if it was renovation or has any inside information.

No clue what's going on.

Knowing Cincinnati, they're putting in another penguin exhibit. Can't have too many of those. Are there any insectivorous penguins?

I kid, of course.

You jest, but the main penguin atrium of Brookfield's Living Coast has (or had) several invert exhibits embedded into the rockwork. And Cincinnati has had animals like tamarins, herptiles and naked mole rats to illustrate different facets of insect life... in a 6-degrees-of-separation sense, penguins and insects are actually connected!

Oh, I've seen both the Living Coast and the different species in the Insectarium. I've been going through that building for 40 plus years. Zoos definitely make some big stretches to make thematics appear to work out.

Sadly, I don't have a ton of respect for Cincinnati's ability to design anything all that interesting anymore. We'll see how it goes with Bear Ridge and eventually the new elephant exhibit.

Went to upload some photos for updates for the weekend but seems like @Moebelle beat me to all the good stuff! :p I'll just elaborate on some of it since it hasn't really been discussed yet.

  • Elephant Trek is really starting to come along. The construction fences by The Grove no longer have privacy mesh, so progress is incredibly noticeable now compared to my last visit in January. Might have to take a walk up to the picnic shelters to get a true overall view of the size of the area next time I go. Totally missed the zoo posting a video update to YouTube two weeks ago. You can see a lot more here:

  • Finally have life support systems for Sea Otter Coast! Other than that, the adjustments to the rock work seem to be complete. Hoping the land portions of the exhibit will really start to take shape soon.

Everything was on exhibit and visible, but the leaf-cutter ants only had their first area open. All of their tunnels have been removed and it is noted in the foraging area at the end that they are working on improvements to the exhibit. The butterfly area was also closed and being worked on.

I'm really interested in seeing how the bear renovation shakes out. It would be encouraging to see them do well with it, but I'm not holding my breath. Anxious to see how the land allotments look when the final product arrives. I can see space for bears and otters, but any additional species would be a tight fit in that area.

From Facebook:

Baby Bump Alert! We are thrilled to announce that Stevie the bongo is pregnant and due later this spring. This is a bittersweet bundle of joy. Bitter because Stevie’s mate, Beau, passed away earlier this year. Sweet because this little bundle will keep his legacy alive.

There are probably none now because the website still says they're closed, but I'd appreciate updates on this in the future because I may make my first visit this year and Night Hunters is my highest priority exhibit (for aardwolves and some felines I have seen before but only sleeping barely visible in the corner of exhibits due to it being broad daylight). This will help with trip planning a lot because I'm also planning on the National Aviary at some point and dad and I are debating which trip to take first. Would greatly appreciate it.
This may be my next zoo in the coming month or two. What has reopened?

Sorry I keep asking questions, but lastly what is up with the P&G Discovery Forest? Is it just a giant building with one sloth in it, or is there more in there?

It's a conservatory with live tropical plants with an event room, and several other rooms reserved for camp groups. It has a sloth, and last I was in there (2 years ago), armadillos share one part of their habitat. If you'd like, you can DM me any questions about the zoo.
