Zoo Bucket List

Bristol is closing, so I figured since the Wild Place will become the new Bristol Zoo, it would kind of make sense. Plus the only country in Europe I think I'll make it to is the UK.

I really wish it were but it won't be anything like Bristol tbh. And not terribly accessible by public transport to boot....
Hamerton is a fair thought and I can't really fault it, although if you're looking for rarities you could hardly look past Plzen. But yeah fair enough, I can see the appeal, particularly if you like marsupials.

Now that I've been to a few of the places on my previous list, I think a remake is due. This time, I have divided the zoos and aquariums into categories based on how realistic it is for me to visit them in the future:

National Aquarium In Baltimore

Now that my second older sister is going away to college. I can finally start doing serious zoo traveling with my parents (had to be taken out of school due to PTSD). So here is a revamped list.

- Potter Park Zoo (I have relatives down there + only an hour away)
- John Ball Zoo (again)
- Binder Park Zoo
- Fort Wayne Children's Zoo
- Akron Zoo
- Columbus Zoo & Aquarium (again)
- Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden

My (semi-realistic) zoo bucket list:

Already Scheduled Trip:
- Ripley's Aquarium of Canada
- Toronto Zoo
- Detroit Zoo
- Toledo Zoo

Possibilities For Short Trips:
- Seneca Park Zoo
- Safari Niagara
- African Lion Safari
- Erie Zoo
- Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium
- Squam Lakes Natural Science Center (haven't visited since before I started my life list)
- Maine Wildlife Park (haven't visited since before I started my life list)
- Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo (pretty much the only major New England Zoo I've never visited)
- Blue Hills Trailside Museum (I've driven past it multiple times, but never been able to stop. I've also done a bit of hiking in the Blue Hills including the entire Skyline Trail- but never a stop at the museum)

Zoos I'd Love to Visit but Require Overnight Trips, some of these are more realistic than others:
- Columbus Zoo and Aquarium (visited pre-lifelist, would like to see bonobos again)
- The Wilds (I've heard awesome things about The Wilds, would love to see the large takin herd and the rhinos)
- Brookfield Zoo (The primate nerd and zoo history nerd in me would both be in heaven to see Tropic World, also pangolins, visited as a child but barely remember it)
- Lincoln Park Zoo (A lot of the primates are a top priority here, and the Macaque Forest seems awesome, visited as a child but barely remember it)
- Shedd Aquarium (As a big fan of freshwater exhibits, I'd be very interested in seeing Shedd's Amazon Rising exhibit, visited as a child but barely remember it)
- Cheyenne Mountain Zoo (the hippo and giraffe areas both seem awesome, and this is another zoo I've heard great things about)
- Denver Zoo (I want to see the Elephant Passage)
- Omaha's Henry-Doorly Zoo (one of the greatest zoos in the US, I'd especially like to see the Desert Dome)
- Kansas City Zoo (the chimpanzee exhibit seems incredible, and I'd love to see that in person)
- Smithsonian's National Zoo (visited pre-lifelist, want to see the "new" Bird House)
- National Aquarium in Baltimore (another pre-lifelist visit, would like to re-experience the Australia section)
- Maryland Zoo (did not have the chance to visit last time I was in Baltimore, so if I have the chance to return to NAIB I'd love to build in a visit to the zoo)
- Greensboro Science Center (this facility has fascinated me since I first learned about it, due to how unique it is, Javan gibbons are also a priority)
- North Carolina Zoo (this zoo has been moving up my radar lately, and the number of massive, expansive exhibits here seems really cool)
- Memphis Zoo (the hippo area and overall theming seems great, I'd also love to experience the nocturnal house and see slender lorises)
- Nashville Zoo (the number of exhibits here that are amongst the best of their kind in the country is incredible, would love the opportunity to take it all in)
- Tennessee Aquarium (for the large freshwater collection)
- Louisville Zoo (three AZA exhibit award-winning complexes is an incredible feat, so I'd love the chance to see those three exhibits)
- Indianapolis Zoo (Orangutan Center has fascinated me since it opened, would really like the chance to see it in person- also crab-eating macaques)
- Woodland Park Zoo (The historic ape exhibits would be great, although I wouldn't want to visit before the tree kangaroo exhibit opens as that's one of my favorite animals and one WPZ is known for)
- Oklahoma City Zoo (Sanctuary Asia and Oklahoma Trails both seem great, also racoon dogs are a priority)
- Dallas Zoo (Elephants in a mixed-species exhibit is a really neat concept and I'd love to see it in person)
- Dallas World Aquarium (The amount of neotropical species, especially birds, kept here is incredible)
- Houston Zoo (Galapagos, Pantanal, and Elephant complexes are all amongst the best-of-their-kind, and the first two are extremely unique in their own right)
- Saint Louis Zoo (visited pre-lifelist, would like to see the Primate Canopy Trails and also visit Kayin, who I frequently saw at Buffalo Zoo before his move to STL)
- Zoo Atlanta (I'd really like to hit all the zoos with a long history with gorillas, and this is one of those really iconic gorilla zoos that I'd really like to visit)

Non-realistically, I'd also love the opportunity to hit some of the great zoos of Europe, Singapore, and the Western US, but all of us are limited by geography, finances, and time, so for now this is my list.

My Top 10 (no specific order)

I also want to visit (or re-visit) all of the zoos in Ohio. Most of them have added a lot of new exhibits since I've last been to them. The only two I have not been to in the state are Akron Zoo and The Wilds.
I wanted to make a revamped bucket list because I've made myself more familiar with other zoos. I also was able to visit 4 of those 13 since I made the list.

Wouldn’t mind a trip to see all the various zoos in Singapore too.

I have very few zoos on my list, but I want to see the Moray Bay Aquarium, Aquarium of the Pacific, and no specific Northern European Zoo. I would like to see a colder climate zoo.
Do you mean Monterey Bay Aquarium? Or Morro Bay Aquarium?

I would love to visit Marwell Zoo due to all the hoofstock species they have however It would be a dream come true to visit Berlin Zoo, Tierpark Berlin, Paira Daiza, Jardin de Plantes and Paris Zoo.

I have not visited many zoos so I have a bug wishlist, but I will not show it all but only they top 10 (in no specific order).

My taste in zoos and aquariums has matured significantly since I last posted my bucket list, so I can confidently add my new renditions of facilities that I have a heavy desire of seeing.

Zoos:
  • Albuquerque BioPark
  • Biôdome de Montreal
  • Bronx Zoo
  • Blank Park Zoo
  • Brookfield Zoo
  • Central Park Zoo — Despite being extremely popular in both the media and the zoo world, it has always maintained that small zoo charm in my mind.
  • Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden
  • Columbus Zoo and Aquarium
  • Como Park Zoo & Conservatory
  • Dallas Zoo
  • Detroit Zoo — Largest penguin exhibit in the country with 5 species. I don’t need to say much more!
  • Faunia (Madrid)
  • Hemker Park Zoo
  • Houston Zoo
  • Indianapolis Zoo
  • John Ball Zoo
  • Kansas City Zoo
  • Lincoln Park Zoo
  • Louisville Zoo
  • Maryland Zoo in Baltimore
  • Milwaukee County Zoo
  • Minnesota Zoo
  • National Aviary
  • North Carolina Zoo — Impressive all around, and the massive animal yards alone feel like a guaranteed pleaser. The highlight for me would probably be the best and most diverse alcid exhibit in North America, with two species that can’t be found anywhere else (even though alcids aren’t common to begin with :().
  • Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium
  • Paira Daiza
  • Potter Park Zoo
  • Riverbanks Zoo & Garden
  • Rosamond Gifford Zoo
  • San Diego Zoo
  • San Diego Zoo Safari Park
  • Singapore Zoo
  • Taronga Zoo
  • The Wilds
  • Tulsa Zoo
  • Woodland Park Zoo
  • Zoo Miami
Aquariums:
  • Alaska SeaLife Center
  • Aquarium of the Pacific — AOTP, Monterey, and National all pretty much have the same reason as to why they’re on my bucket list: A stunning array of seabirds, many of which are only kept in those facilities.
  • Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography
  • Georgia Aquarium
  • Loveland Living Planet Aquarium
  • Monterey Bay Aquarium
  • Moody Gardens
  • New England Aquarium
  • Newport Aquarium
  • National Aquarium
  • Seattle Aquarium
  • SeaWorld San Diego — Only holder of emperor penguins, in addition to having five other species, several of which are also rare in captivity.

This is no criticism, but I am always surprised which European zoos feature and don't feature on bucket lists from non-Europeans. Makes you wonder which other factors play a bigger role than quality.
