Wingham Wildlife Park Wingham Wildlife Park News 2023

Does anyone know where kaia is in wingham as it was meant to b going into the clouded lep encloseure and clouded leps moved to a new encloseure

Kaia is in the clouded leopard enclosure and clouded leopards are in the nocturnal house

The nocturnal house is due to open today. Although there is no article about the house itself, the website has released some pictures in a blog post about nocturnal animals. The six species shown are:
  • Asian palm civet (from what I can gather, a new species for the park)
  • Senegal bushbaby
  • Egyptian fruit bat
  • Clouded leopard
  • A constricting snake
  • Northern Luzon giant cloud rat
The blog post can be seen below (information about the opening date of the nocturnal house comes from their Facebook page):
Circadian rhythms- part one - Animal Experiences At Wingham Wildlife Park In Kent

Other species in the nocturnal house signed today:
Gila monster
Beaded lizard
New Caledonia giant gecko
African fat tailed gecko
Savu Island python
3 banded armadillo
Racoon dog
Tawny frogmouth
Spix's Night Monkey
Sugar glider
Naked mole rat (signed but nothing there)

Correct me if I am mistaken, but with 17 species, is it the largest nocturnal house in the UK? Well over twice what London has in its current state (7 species), although if memory serves, Bristol would still surpass it were it still open.

I am slightly concerned about the idea of all-indoor enclosures for Racoon Dogs and Clouded Leopard in particular. Do they have any form of outdoor access?

The nocturnal small mammal house at Cannon Hall Farm has 23 species with more to come i believe:)

To be honest this was my first thought too . I have no idea whether those species have a proper outdoor cage. It appears that those enclosures are similar to the aye aye exhibit at London - they appear to be basic cages added to the side of the indoor building with something dark over the top.

To be fair although the lighting isn't the best all the exhibits are bigger than normally seen in nocturnal houses. It appears there are several spare enclosures as the 2 main corridors have links between the exhibits on either side , so new species could easily be added. Although currently all species in this area have access to 2 exhibits it probably isn't needed.

I believe the Asian palm civets used to be in the 'indoor jungle' area at Sandwich Wildlife Park before it closed.

I haven't been to Wingham but out of curiosity the "moon bears" are they pure asiatic black bears and how many are there out of interest?

They are of the Manchurian subspecies (U. t. ussuricus) and there is a breeding pair. They have had a cub in the past but unsure if it's still at Wingham.
