A different alphabet game

Sure.
The species I am thinking of is an Asian amphibian listed as endangered by IUCN. The species shares the first part of it's name with a certain animated monkey sidekick.
What animal am I thinking of?
 
This is a group of mammals
They are named after Asian rodents
A fossil form is named after a video game character
 
Would you be willing to share which video game features the character is is named for, or is it too much of a giveaway?

(fyi I will be using an indenginous name so be aware of that)

This mammal is covered with white spots on its pelage, it hails from the Southern Hemisphere, where due to mainly recent-ish human caused effects, were wiped out from nearly all of it's former range in the aridlands of its home country, restricted to a few refugia in the extreme South West, although now they've been reintroduced into a few sites across their once vast range.
