San Diego Zoo Safari Park San Diego Zoo Safari Park News 2023

Great news! Perhaps one of my favorite Antelope species :)
This group of Nubian Soemmering's gazelle is of regional and even global importance for ex situ management. The original founder stock originated from 3.3 individuals from Somalia (export Mombasa?) and later import of 2.2 individuals from Cairo Zoo.

In the Middle East Al Wabra used to manage Nubian Soemmering's and I believe even a second subspecies. I am pretty sure that given the level of wild animal trade the species is better represented in captivity than we give them credit for in the North.

It's sad to think of that African animal exhibit zone without warthogs, as they have anchored it for many years. That whole area maybe needs a refresh. The primate species are gone. The former interpretive area where there was once an aardvark and cichlids has been abandoned. It would be good to see the area restored to its former glory.

well installing the tram station in the middle of it all didn’t help either

IMO, the thing that needs the biggest refresh is the gorilla exhibit; though I'm sure they're aware of it and I assume it'll be their next project after Elephant Valley.
It is my understanding that their hands have been rather tied when it comes to any major renovations of the main gorilla exhibit. With a couple of very geriatric individuals, the park has been reluctant to do any sort of modifications, construction, moves, etc., in order to not cause any undue stress to these animals in their golden years of life. The exhibit is definitely on the park's radar for the future, though.

Oh, I thought it was a breeding group. Ig they're waiting for them to die before they do anything.

Is there going to be an exhibit for them in Condor Ridge?

Also, if the gorilla exhibit is going to be renovated. Either move the Gorillas to the San Diego Zoo which they'll rotate with the Zoo's Troop or to another zoo?

The herd of addax in the old giant eland exhibit has been removed. There is now just the breeding herd of Nubian Soemmerring’s gazelles in that exhibit.
Are they being phased out or just moved bts? I was there on Monday and did see 2 Addax mixed with Soemmerring’s

There has been some shuffling around with the Somali wild ass herd. The male has been pulled from the herd on exhibit along the Africa Tram, and three additional females have been introduced to said exhibit. Hopefully all three females that were on display with the male are pregnant and we will see foals on the ground this coming year!
