North American Polar Bear Population 2023

For sure, I was just saying that there weren’t any news articles or anything like that about it online, which is surprising considering this is a huge deal for the captive North American polar bear population.

Agreed on that! There also hasn't been anything from the opposition, either.

A news article in the Louisville Zoo member magazine states the ban on wild polar bears owned by the US Fish & Wildlife has been lifted. Payton, before his death, was slated to breed with Qannik. Now this allows Qannik, Kali and the cub at the Alaska Zoo to breed with the captive US polar bear population and maybe more orphan wild cubs can be rescued by US zoos.
Here is the link to the article if interested:

Tbh, I'm also surprised at the lack of major articles on the matter or any special media posts.

This seems too big a story to get such a cold shoulder

I'm not surprised. It really isn't a "big story". The USFWS simply made some changes to the loans/permits of housing a handful of polar bears. While being government documents they were probably posted somewhere, I'm not really sure anyone is paying attention to this, and in the grand scheme of everything the government does changing some rules regarding polar bears isn't a big deal (even if it does have a potentially big effect on the population. It's also not like zoos have been talking publicly, either before or after the change, about the USFWS rules on breeding polar bears, so it's not like it was an issue in the public eye.

If this flies under the radar of the ARA nut jobs, fine by me!
I really don't think it is appropriate to be using "nut jobs" to refer to ARA groups. No matter how much you disagree with these groups (as I'm sure most Zoochatters do), they are not crazy and hyperbolizing these groups and calling them names doesn't do anyone any good.

We will have to respectfully disagree, their past behavior and agendas speak loudly in my opinion.

Even if you genuinely hate these people, you gotta play nice. That includes watching your tone. To be selfish, they'll happily use backtalk as ammo so you gotta watch what you say.

I’ll have to disagree with you here as well. Failure to call out the ridiculousness has not fared well for any institution. The demise of SeaWorld’s orca program is a prime example of taking a backseat and not calling out the nonsense.

It’s OK to disagree. I’m not really interested in a scolding for speaking up.

I simply said to watch your language and how you talk.

For example, when dealing with the NhRP, the Bronx Zoo and Cheyenne Mountian Zoo gave very eloquent responses

Using ableist terms like "nut job" isn't calling them out, though. Name calling is never a good look when opposing something/someone.

It is okay to disagree, and by all means you can criticize any positions they hold you disagree with (although I'm not sure this thread is the place to be bringing them up), but belittling the people and criticizing them as people (not criticizing specific positions) is taking it way too far. The fact they have different perspectives on things, even a perspective we vehemently oppose, does not mean they are crazy, and calling them a "nut job" is both inappropriate and offensive.

Thanks for your view points. We all can have our opinions and I stand by mine. No need for further pontification.

Hope has stopped denning, so that leaves Brookfield out for the chance of cubs.
Unsurprising but unfortunate. At this point I'm mainly looking at Detroit, with their proven bear, in hope of getting at least one cub born this year. In 2020-2021, Astra and Laerke weren't announced until January 28 (Two Polar Bear Cubs Born at the Detroit Zoo - Detroit Zoo), while Columbus, our other proven pair, announced their 2019 birth on November 29 (Columbus Zoo polar bear Aurora gives birth to cub on Thanksgiving Day). While I'd love if an unproven pair gave birth this year (and many zoos with an unproven mother would understandably not want to announce a birth right away), given the difficulty in breeding polar bears I'm not very optimistic.

I was told a few days ago that Suka is back out already, but I don't know how true that is. Neva will be out soon too, apparently.
