Hi I was wondering if anyone happens to know the name of the okapi that was at the Philadelphia zoo and I don’t know when it was born or if it was a male or a female but I do know it was there in the early 2000s.
The on-line Okapi Studbook lists a male okapi named "Kesho" as arriving Philadelphia on 6th July 2000.

The link I provided, lists okapis by zoo in alphabetical sequence; if you scroll down until you find zoos beginning with "P" you should find him listed under Philadelphia Zoo.

The complete skew of male calves is baffling, we keep successfully getting calves on the ground but they're all the same sex. Surely there's some sort of study or investigation in progress into this phenomenon to provide some answers before its too late? Anyone have information they can share on the subject?
I'm curious about this too. While I'm not an expert in okapi biology, I am aware in some other species biologists have started to acknowledge that there can be social, physiological, or ecological pressures impacting the sex ratio (I know in primatology this is a really interesting topic with conflicting evidence as it relates to baboons), so it'd be worth some sort of investigation in case, say, stress hormones, or some other factor, might be tipping the scale towards male calves.

Thanks for this. What happened to Kweli at Bronx Zoo? I know she had heart problems, but I never saw anything saying she passed.

I see the zoos in Europe seem to be more successful in breeding female calves than the U.S. zoos (general trend over time). Does anyone know of discussions between zoos with breeding programs in the U.S. and these successful zoos with young female okapis in Europe in regards to transporting/exchanging okapi? I would also imagine this would be good in terms of circulating genetics (for the most part).
